[Somewhat OT] Mention of D&D on VH1's "I Love the 80s"

Does anyone remember when Metallica refused to make videos? Those were the days.

Hell, yes, my friend. Remember when Metallica made songs were raging against the stupidity and futility of life, rather than wallowing in it like a latter-day Depeche Mode? Give me "One" any day over "Unforgiven", "Whiskey In the Jar", "Turn the Page", or any of that other whiny garbage.

Captain N: The Game Master
Voltron
Robotech
Silverhawks
Legend of Zelda
He-Man
Thundercats
G.I. Joe
Danger Mouse
M.A.S.K.
Pole Position
Dungeons & Dragons
Galaxy Rangers
Transformers
Incredible Hulk
Spiderman and his Amazing Friends
Mysterious Cities of Gold
Starcom
Go-Bots
Bravestar
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Other great 80's toons that we will never see the likes of again:
The Mighty Orbots
Bionic Six
Visionaries
Inhumanoids

Anyone remember those? Mighty Orbots was a short-lived Rankin-Bass style toon ala Sliverhawks or Thundercats. Bionic Six was an outstandingly clever toon, with a lot of witty humor from both the good guys and the villains. Visionaries and Inhumanoids were both Marvel toons, the former demonstrating a great deal of clever, and the latter generating a good does of violent, gross horror as big nasty things from below try to devour humankind.

No, but I remember Beverly Hills Teens. :)

I find it ironic that you agree firstly with the sentiment that Metallica making videos was a negative and then go on to praise the first song they chose to make into a video.

What I miss most about the 80s is the pop punk explosion that occured. The Descendents and later ALL, Green Day formed up (still have all the first pressings of their EPs and albums on Lookout records in green vinyl, might as well seel out, they did), and bands like NOFX and Bad Religion were wailing away in punk rock oblivion not really caring too much if they got noticed by the suits. There has always been happy music and there has always been depressing music out there, you just have to know where to look. Those that have pointed out that this nostalgia takes place in 20 year cycles is exactamundo to quote my favorite icnoic 70's 50s wannabe. And of course the 90's saw the rise of That 70s show. And, those that have pointed out that fashions and trends often are not original at all are quite spot on in that observation as well. Nothing new under the sun I guess. Of course the pop punk movement of the 80's was a revolt against the trendiness of the New Wave movement and it becoming mainstream rather than alternative. Check out these lyrics from the Descendents for a clue:

"Hey you, new wave, come over here You're the prettiest thing I've seen all year Hey you, new wave, don't turn away Close those pouty lips and listen to what I say Why must you smoke that clove cigarette? Why must you act like you've got a hole in you head? Why don't you split the squares and love me instead? You're all shiny and clean, I've seen you in my dreams Like the Rolls Royce I can't have Your presence makes me scream Sour grapes, you leave such a bad taste Sour grapes, I don't need you anyways Sour grapes, feeding, feeding my rage."

Also please note that teen angst and boys being rejected will always sell records. That is all.

I think Spuds (and his gals) would disagree.

OK, I'll admit it though...one of my characters had a war dog named Spuds. [hanging head in shame]

You too, eh Caudor(I'm tempted to misrint your name into Caldor's everytime I see it).

The mid 80s were also the high water mark of guitar skill. Nothing before or since compares to the heavy metal guitar gods of that era. Most people dismissed the entire genre, but there were some incredible riffs in 80s metal, the likes of which are unheard of today.

PS

One word: Buckethead. Have you ever heard that freak play guitar(now he plays with Haxyl Rose in the New G&R, a true waste of his talents). I think Buckethead is gonna be remembered one day as the greatest guitar god of them all. The stuff he can make a guitar do is what inspired me to learn how to play in the first place.

But the two greatest 80s bands were:
Damn Yankees and ManoWar.

Ah, the eighties - they bring a smile to my face everytime they come up. My wife and I both graduated from High School in 1989 - so pretty much anything from there I will listen to - even stuff that I hated back in the 80's.

For a while Denver had a "retro" radio station that played all 80s all the time and one of thier DJs was Nina Blackwood - I I pretty much enjoyed all of what was played - until is was turned into a Spanish station :(

Also one of the reasons that the 80's got the label as the greed decade was in part a reaction against the Reagan White-House whose concept of trickle-down economics was not universally accetped.

Now some other bands to remember:

Bauhaus
Love and Rockets
Peter Murphy
Tones on Tail (basically all the same group)
Tom Tom Club
Talking Heads (of course they are sort of 70s like Blondie)
Phil Collins (and his "acting" on Miami Vice - the ultimate 80s show!!!!)
The Smiths (I hated Girlfreind in a Coma)
Wall of Vodoo (Recommend thier greatest hits!!!!)

Yep, it is true. By the way, I take the username Caudor from my favorite Bard character...Caudor Quickcharm He was part of a party that opened up a can of whoop on some slave lords. (the old A1-4 series). I have fond memories of those times.
