Soo... How has Vista treated you so far?

Still liking it, increased security and all.

On the other hand, I'm glad I'm a techie. Older toys (esp. games) don't play well with heightened security, so I have to jiggle the handle a bit.

It's been working ok, except for Vanguard, so I'm dual-booting XP. I don't like it so much that I'd miss it if I didn't have it; don't hate it so much that I'd bother to rip it out and not use it. Although, if I didn't sort of have to have it around for work, I probably wouldn't bother.

Performance is very good, but I just built a new PC, so it should be. Other than lingering NVidia 8800 driver issues, it's been rock solid.

I actually installed it a long time ago (got a copy* of the business edition through my work before it came out in retail). Best thing I have to say about it is that it gave me an excuse to upgrade my video card for that sexy, sexy aero interface.

I'm set up to dual boot, and I haven't booted Vista in months. There's just no reason to. Don't get me wrong-- I don't hate it, and I could see myself getting used to and even preferring most of the changes-- but there's just no compelling reason to upgrade from XP.

*Yes, it's legit. Got my own specific keycode and all :p

Love the interface. Love the gadgets. Haven't tried any games yet. Office stuff and Photoshop work just fine.

Then again, this is a brand new unit so I'm still high on that. Keep an eye on my other thread if you want a little more about Vista. ;)

lingering NVidia 8800 driver issues...
What issues have you had ? The 8800 has been targeted as the DX10 card and I believe that you need Vista to run that. The current DX10 demo requires Vista so I guess they made it with it. Is it unstable ? and do you have oodles of PSU power for it ? I'm considering an 8800 card when they produce a driver for x64.

Won't touch it for a while...

- Lots of trouble for people who have 8800 nvidia cards (i have two).
- Some of the games i play give nasty errors under 8800 cards and Vista (Supreme Commander).
- Some games have display errors (Vanguard).
- Hardware support isn't what i'm used to (my brothers tv card wasn't recognized for example).
- A lot of tools i use don't work or don't work well under Vista (have to wait for Vista compatible versions).
- Performance impact isn't huge, but i'm still stuck with a dual core 4600+ and 2GB of RAM. While that might not sound bad, i regularry hit a performance wall under XP (another 45 days and i'll be getting myself a intel quadcore for that reason).
- Investment in money and time, while i am a computer tech guy that loves his gadgets, i'm not really looking for another timesink that won't get me some significant benefits. There's a reason why i stopped using Linux (time intensive to learn if your not used to it).

In short, i'll wait a while longer (i expect atleast another six months). I suspect that it will be DX10 games that will pull me in (the new Eve Vista client for example). But it will start with a dual boot and gradual migration to the new platform.

Brand new Antec 650w power supply, specifically verified to be more than sufficient for this board.

It's really just teething pains on the drivers. I played NWN2 with a few minor problems, and still play Civ4 on it. Played some demos (eg Supreme Commander) with nary an issue. But, for the longest time (till the last beta driver rev), if I put the PC to sleep, after I woke it back up it would BSD anytime I played a video. Vanguard crashes at least once an hour, whereas under XP it's pretty stable, maybe one CTD a night if that.

There are x64 drivers for it. I wouldn't run x64 Vista unless I had a compelling reason, though. The difference in driver-signing requirements is a PITA for the power user/gamer (although there are workarounds).

I'm liking it alot. Civ4, World of Warcraft (although I have to run the updater as an admin everytime it goes), and Europa Universalis 3 all worked on it so far.

It's very slick, and the start up time is unbelievably fast. I think I do have to turn off startup on mouse movement though... the sleep mode seems to pop off too frequently.
There's been a couple of updates, but they happen when you turn the computer off automatically, so it's almost invisible, really.
