Baldur's Gate

I've never seen Baldur's Gate, believe it or not– not a huge fan of computer games, frankly. But the folks who made it were in contact with us all the time. WotC was forwarding concept sketches to them as we did them. That's not to say that everything they did for Baldur's Gate was based on our work, but NeverWinter Nights used our Style Guide as a starting point. Incidentally, they have a staff of talented artists too.

That's what an IP is all about. That's what we were doing: building IP.

It's all built now, I guess...

Hey Todd,

It is a shame that what has come to pass resulted in your visit to the boards here for the first time (as a poster at least). Allow me to say welcome to ENWorld, I am sure you will find a great community here and I hope you plan to stick around and voice your thoughts or comments like so many others in the industry either artists, publishers, writers or players/GMs. I'm also sure that it won't take long before you have too much to do ;). Good Luck and let the bidding begin!!!

3E's style of gear reminded me of the style used in the Baldur's Gate CRPG series in the item descriptions to an extent - most noticeably the quite stylistic shields. It made me wonder whether they were an influence on the 3E look.

It would be the other way round, if anything. BG1's look wasn't particularly stylistic. BG2, with its spikey shields, came out at the end of 2000, after 3E's release.

Todd: any news on what's happening to Sam Wood? I swear, the two of you ARE the 3E look.

Well, I think I paid Kip the Bold USD40 to do a couple of colour character portraits, a few weeks back. ;)

Hi Todd. You don't know me but I've seen your work in the three core rulebooks. I have to admit I did like Elmore's style better but that's just my opinion. I think that when WOTC took over at first it was a good thing(they saved the business so to speak ). I don't run 3rd Edition but i will play it. I like the First Edtion of AD&D the most. What Hasbro is doing doesn't suprise me at all. I have sensed this for some time now and I am just plain fed up with d20 in general. I don't think anyone has any faith in Hasbro churning out product that is amazing. Trust is everything. Trust that the company which produces the game and the materials will continue to seek only the highest of quality and consistency. Quality is in the eyes of the beholder (hehe) when it comes to games and art. Consistency however is much deeper than quality. The two are intertwined it seems. That is why I have returned to the First Edition of the game. The ship is sinking my friend and it's actually probably better that they had you jump the plank. At least you will have a chance of swimming to shore. In my eyes a good chance. By the way I'm curious what DID ever happen to all of those TSR artists from the 80's and early 90's?
