Sorcerer Spell Progression

Could anyone suggest a good spell progression up to 20th level for a sorcerer. I'm not very used to playing spell casters, but am definately a rules hound and love snooping through all the books to find obscure tidbits. (this doesn't mean I'm a pure power gamer though. I prefer interesting utility spells to straight blasting ones).
If you do suggest a progression, could you tell me a bit about why you picked it and what concept was behind your character.
I'm only at 6th level so far and it seems to me there are some spells that one just has to pick (ie: fireball, invisibility/mirror image, magic missile). Are there good alternatives?

I love the simplicity and variability of the sorcerer class compared to the wizard and hopefully I'll be playing more of these in the future.
Thanks,
Sam

With the limited number of spells known you could pick any number of differant spells that would make an interesting sorcerer. You could pick spells according to a specific theme, like fire or cold spells, or according to a specific school of magic by choosing mosty conjuration spells, for instance. So what do you want your sorcerer to be like? Then pick spells accordingly.

Others have suggested a more generalist approach. Each spell level should give you 1 attack spell, one defensive spell, one general/utility spell, and then whatever you like. Using this method you might get the typical spells at each level such as you suggested.

I checked out the Blessed of Mesos Prestige Class. It is quite awesome. In fact, I'd be worried my DM would think it's overpowered and ban it.
I run a Scarred Lands Campaign myself and would certainly allow my players to take it. However, roleplaying one would be quite a challenge. Everyone and his brother would be out to get you. Followers of Mesos are hated by pretty much everyone.

What I'm really looking for are examples of sorcerers that people have played to give me an idea of what is possible. I checkout out Thanee's spell progression for his 14th level sorceress which seemed cool.

Pick a theme for your character and then run with it. Select spells in accordence with that theme. Even beter, develop the characters personality (Charisma Based spell casting after all) and then select spells based on that.

If he is into infiltration and general sneakyness, go with illusion and polymorphic effects.

If is a manipulator, select enchantment charm spells and others that you can come up with devious uses for.

I like to think of my sorcerers as sort of super powered people (comic book heros or villans) where there powers generaly fit a theme and then run with it.

Remeber that a Sorcerers magic is powered by the force of his personality, not is Intelligence or wisdom. He could be the dumest, uneducated dolt on the planet, but if he has a strong personality (ie. Charisma Attribute) then he will be a great Sorcerer.

Also, don't forget: If you are playing a Sorceror, then you have a sharply limited list of spells - if you aim for a prestige class that requires a lot of spells (Like the Archmage: requires "...knowledge of 5th-level or higher spells from at least five schools", or Loremaster: "...seven different divination spells, one of which must be 3rd level or higher" (will also need to somehow add another Knoweledge skill as a class skill)), you will need to start planning early.

Sam,

Well that's why you don't advertise you're Blessed of Mesos. But yeah sorcerers in the Scarred Lands, ESPECIALLY Mesosian sorcerers tend to get toasted by the locals a good bit.

*thought Thanee was girl...*
