Sorceror type ISO awesome

First Post
I'm playing a level 12 spell-slingin' human sorceress, and I'm wondering how to kick it up a notch with prestige classes. With the character I'm playing, I could see her as a Wild Mage, or having levels of Warmage.

Since the Gm is saying that I could retool the character, I'm looking for suggestions re: 1) Should I knock her down to Sorceress 8/ Prestige class 4, and if that would cause more awesome to occur and 2) what feats should be on my priority list.

Suggestions (and cookies!) are welcome.

Well, Sorcerer is an arcane caster class. Unless you have some very specific multi-role build (say, Enlightened Fist, Arcane Trickster and such) in mind, prestige classes which give you full-progression in your spell-casting ability are your best friends.

Wild Mage (Complete Arcane), Ruathar (Races of Wild), Abjurant Champion (Complete Mage) are good prestige classes to check.

Also, if you have not yet using PHB II alternative class feature for your Sorceress, it worth reading, definitely.

Abjurant Champion [CM] is great either for later (11th level onwards), if you can qualify for it (you really don't want to waste too many feats, so having to take a feat for the martial weapon proficiency might not be so good), or with some minor multiclassing (Fighter 1 / Sorcerer 8 / Abjurant Champion or Sorcerer 6 / Human Paragon 3 / Abjurant Champion).

For full caster PrC, the Incantatrix [PGtF] or Mage of the Arcane Order [CA] are both very strong choices (the latter has a high cost in terms of feats, as you need Arcane Preparation and Cooperative Spell - both being pretty much useless, but the flexibility gained with the Spellpool is certainly worth that much).

A very nice trick with the Spellpool is to use a Ring of Theurgy [CA] and store the called spells in there, when you are not in a hurry, so you can have a few spells you do not have learned available for times when you might need them without taxing your Spellpool limit too hard.

The Ruathar (if you can qualify for it, as it requires more than just stats) is also a very good way towards Abjurant Champion (even without giving up a caster level).

Yeah. There is a Sorcerer/Ruathar/Abjurant Champion PC in my current campaign and she is very effective and tough. But as Thanee says, Ruathar is rather a story-based prestige class and you may not qualify for it.

I like Wild Mage as you can have Use Magic Device as your class skill. With your high CHA, you can easily have enough UMD modifier to activate various non-sorcerer magic items.

As for feats, in my experience, Heighten Spell and Empower Spell are the top 2 most versatile metamagic feats.

You may also want to check various Heritage feats and reserve feats in supplements like Complete Arcane, Complete Mage & Complete Scoundrel. Something which raise your caster level and give you additional known spells are very useful.

Versatile Spellcaster feat in Races of Dragon is very good feat, too.

PHB2 has some really good Heritage feats. Infernal Sorcerer Howl for example, gives you a potent area attack, that is a supernatural ability. Very useful. :)

I've seen a very effective character who took UA's battle sorcerer to gain early entry to abjurant champion. She was a great spellcaster, and when it came time to mix it up in melee she used the arcane strike feat in conjunction with improved TWF to get lots of good attacks with plenty of bonus damage.

DCv1 has some "Bloodline" feats as well.

If you have a decent selection of spells already- or if you just like the idea of it- I've been having a lot of fun with the Draconic Heritage feats, especially Draconic Breath. (Yes, the Infernal Howl is mechanically superior, but I happen to like flinging electricity around in general...and spitting lightning bolts is a blast.) Even though the damage tradeoff isn't the best (compared to damage spells), it gives you a nice "secret" weapon that doesn't provoke AoOs and has no somatic component.

The last Sorcerer I played (they are my favorite class after all) was a Battle Sorcerer with the Draconic Bloodline from Dragon Compendium (when you wrote the original article its easy to talk your DM into using it :) ). That would give you better HD, a martial weapons proff, and the ability to use light armor. The Bloodline feat makes up for the spells you loose by taking the Battle Sorcerer variant. From there, IIRC, you could easily go Abjurant Champion w/o any multiclassing.
