Speaking of firearms, does anyone use them in their game?

In the Future?

For my own Shattered World setting, I have kinda pencilled in the idea that there are a few places where the gun has started to make a (re)appearance, using special alchemical 'firepowder'. I only intend for them to be basic hand cannons at this stage, though there's scope for better if Pcs want to approach the question.

I say reappearance advisedly; the setting involves a major Cataclysm that destroyed the world (literally), so there's also scope for finding a few leftovers from the major wars that destroyed civilization. What form these will take, I really haven't decided.

I am afraid of the 'Barrier Peaks' type absurdity if I handle it badly. Anyone else try and include a few firearms of more advanced design?

Blackpowder Weapons

I use guns in my world (I've even got a Gunslinger base class), but I made the blackpowder used for the propulsion not as powerful as gunpowder. That way guns can be a little more balanced (which actually makes it that much more fun). There's no auto or sem-auto, but I have revolvers as the standard handgun (1d6 damage). And there are rifles (1d10 damage), shotguns (1d4 damage, but an area spray effect, or 1d12 for slugs...but with only 1 or 2 shots depending on what type you buy it balances out). I won't get into the ranges, that's pretty much where the weapons differ based on model (Criticals do as well). But it has been a wonderful system so far, and I like the wild west effect thrown in with the medieval thing.

As far as enhancement bonuses go, I use the same system as bows (a flaming revolver bestows the flaming effect on the rounds it fires). I'm in the process of making a flachette weapon as well...that oughta be fun ;)

And for the availability of guns...they're not uncommon, but still expensive. Not many use them in my world (believe it or not) because after the initial "cool, It's a gun!" thing wore off, people began realizing that melee weapons were still melee weapons, and arrows were a whole lot cheaper than bullets. In my world the Dwarves are the only ones who know the making of black powder, and it is a well-protected secret known only to those who have to know it. That way we don't get some craft-crazy gnome who decides it's time to create full-auto weapons.
