Special Conversion Thread: Will o' wisps

I think we should boost the Cha higher. All they've got going for them are Cha-based SLAs. Cha 17-19, I say, and a Dex down to 25 or 23 to match.

I think I like dropping deflection for will-o'-deep. The will-o'-dawn AC looks ok.

Darkness descriptor sounds right in immunity to magic.

Should we add some form of telepathy to hypnotic pattern?

Fixed will-o'-deep's AC, as we decided.

Good question on the telepathic link for the o'-dawn. Do we want to make it a unique SLA based on hypnotic pattern, or just give them a separate telepathic link ability that notes it only works on a hypnotized victim?

Well, a unique SLA would let us beef these up a little, as they're kind of wimpy. But low CR is ok with me, so, in absence of objections, I say let's use this:

Telepathy (Su): A will-o'-dawn may communicate telepathically with any creature it has hypnotized with its hypnotic pattern ability, as long as that creature has a language. The will-o'-dawn may communicate only with one creature at a time and only as long as that creature is hypnotized.

Hmmm, I was kind of thinking about inheriting the range from hypnotic pattern, which I think is implied. How would you want to state that?

Hypnotic pattern has a range of Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level), so with a caster level of 9th, its range is 190 feet. So I suppose we could state that it may communicate telepathically with a hypnotized victim as long as it remains within 190 feet of the victim.

Alternatively, we could just make the will-o'-dawn the source of the fascination effect, and thus it would always be within range. :)

Umm, really either way. Or we could put in some other range, which just means the will-o'-dawn might need to move closer. Like adding "and is within 100 ft" after the "as long as that creature has a language" in the ability description.
