Spell range and Fireball

Only 1? Ask him about balor farming some day. Among other things.

OK. Now I've got this image of a balor in overhalls with banjo music playing in the backgroud. Could someone please clarify this before it's to late

Oh... and sorry for the hijack.

Ah, farming, not ranching. I thought a moment about "I choose you, Balor-Chu". And remembered that "What we won't see in D&D 3" list from 2000, especially the entry "Players don't play characters, but character trainer, each with several characters. These characters can only say their own name and the name of their attacks". I always thought that would be kinda stupid when you try to bluff someone.

I found it again. It's actually called balor mining and Hypersmurf didn't really argue for it.

Here.

Personally, I'd just house-rule the "Su" descriptor away.

My personal approach is to say that any edged weapon the Balor decides to use gains the vorpal property as a supernatural ability of the Balor.

And although I knew about the max range fire-hemisphere rule I've always ignored it. It ensure that Firestorms had to all stay within medium range but any burst or emanation I'd joyfully allow to fill its normal area.

That's also a good way to handle it, but since the sword is listed under Treasure, it's probably not what the balor creator intended.

Of course, a DM's call always overrules the balor's creator. But it's useful to keep it in mind for internet rules debates and such. ;)

Yeah - the technique hinges on dropping the Vorpal Sword, and I contend that the wording of the ability does not, in fact, permit a Balor to drop his Vorpal Sword :)

What if the mage turns into a balor and is killed? Could the party keep the sword then? O_O

What if you tricked a low(ish) level PC into reading a scroll and turning into a balor then, hrmmmm?

^_^

The (Su) is only how the weapons look like in the hands of a Balor. :p
I consider it to be left over from 3.0, where it could detect good. So I ignore it and treat the sword as equipment. But that's just me.
