Spell/weapon clarification

Two quick questions:

Could a fighter/wizard chose "ray" for the Weapon Specialization feat (assuming he was a 4th level Fighter and already had Weapon Focus in ray)?

No. Weapon Specialization doesn't allow it.

Instead Complete Arcane created 2 new feats to cover it.

Touch Spell Specialization and Ranged Spell Specialization.

Prerequisites are: Weapon Focus (Touch Spell/Ranged Spell) and Caster Level 4th.

Can the Improved Critical feat be applied to rays?

Yes.

Pages 72-73 of Complete Arcane list the feats that work for weapon like spells, Improved Critical is one of them.

CA also breaks down weapon like spells into touch and ranged spells.
