Spellcraft school retries on items?

The Spellcraft skill gives several specific explanations on DCs, and several of them explain whether you can retry or not. However, there is one particular check that doesn't mention retries:

15 + spell level: When casting detect magic, determine the school of magic involved in the aura of a single item or creature the character can see. (If the aura is not a spell effect, the DC is 15 + half caster level.)

Does this action allow for retries? If a wizards comes across a magic item and wants to know its school, can he simply continue to roll against his spellcraft while concentrating on detect magic, since concentrating on detect magic can last for minutes? If so, then this makes this check almost pointless, since they will most likely get it within several rolls. If you hold it to once per day, they'll still get it relatively quickly. To me, it should be like learning a spell from a spellbook/scroll - either you get it right or you need to study more (add ranks in spellcraft) before you can try again.

Is there an official answer to this?

According to the PHB, page 193: "If the items or creatures bearing the auras are in line of site, you can make Spellcraft skill checks to determine the school of magic involved in each (Make one check per aura; DC 15 + spell level, or 15 + half caster level for a nonspell effect)

It seems to me that you get one check for each item per casting of Detect Magic. This makes it a bit more costly than just concentrating for a few extra seconds.
