Spellfire Counters?

Technik4

First Post
Friend of mine is having difficulty keeping a spellfire wielder under control, he ko'd a hill giant in 2 blasts apparantly. I designed a potion that gives immunity to spellfire for 1 min (2,000 gp), a charm with 3 levels of power that absorbs spellfire damage (as brooch of shielding), it also adds +1 to saves vs spells and spell-like effects. 30pts 4,000 gp, 60pts 12,000, 90 points 20,000.

Then I just quoted out of magic of faerun about how it can be counterspelled with dispel magic, stopped by anti-magic shell, and that the user is detected as if he were a magical item. People could suspect he is a clone, golem, or worse!

Anyone else have suggestions on how to deal with this obviously over-powered feat? (I pointed that out at well :))

use the rules?

i.e. ready action to absorb, area effect spells not absorbable, can't absorb own spells, some creatures will attack at night so dumping everyone else's "left-over" spells into the walking battery isn't always the best of ideas, rogues/monks(evasion and spell DC is can never go up)

imho it isn't that overpowering as long as you know and use the rules for it

Well, it IS powerfull, they knew it when it was made, that is why it was the very first feat that I saw an explicit mention to DM's authorization... think it is being really overpower? Talk to the player and take it out of game, if there is no negotiation, make he fight a spellfire wielder (Pestige Class) for a "highlander" duel, maybe he will not survive it...

oh! what a pitty!

edit: inserted smile.

Suludin thanks for your reply. However, if you take a look at the monster manual, most things dont have evasion, it bypasses DR, it is only half-resistable to fire. Im pretty sure they dont use him to absorb much in combat, just to unleash all his spellfire levels on whatever it is they are facing. It makes the other players feel undervalued to some extent, not to mention the DM who might have planned an interesting encounter which ends up being over in a couple rounds.

Ran: hehe, I also pointed out that having him duel someone with his own powers wouldn't be inappropriate... ;)

are they being given opertunities to power him up all the time?

is it within their rp to power up the 'walking battery' when their spells(for the spell levels) are more effective?

is there just one battle/day all the time?

what other classes does the spellfire wielder have?

Ok, apparantly the spellfire wielder is an arcane gnome (optional race printed in Dragon) with the Item Creation-Wands feat. Hes high enough to make a low level wand and then suck it dry for levels or spellfire as needed.

I think my suggestions helped, the dm is planning a little surprise if he keeps up his uber-munchkin attitude and will certainly consider the drawbacks of spellfire more often.

Thanks for the help

Hrm. . . That would probally be the problem right there. . .

heh, don't know how much help I've provided but you're welcome anyway :)

Soon some powerful people will hear about the spellfire.

Sure he can take out 2 hill giants but what will he do when the Twisted Rune comes for him. :D
