[Spoilers] Has True Blood jumped the shark?

yeah, not really a spoiler. Spoilage would be going into details about the books that isn't the same as the show.

And frankly, a spoiler discussion should be open to all facts on the matter, otherwise you're defeating the conversation as if you'd said No Spoilers and were having this discussion about Season 4 when everyone but Kzach has seen Season 5.

Point is, Sookie grew up in the south, hick-ville. A population more at home with a gun and killing stuff than any other. In the books, she has a rifle handy in the house.

So "being out of character" is only in the viewer's head. she is not a tree hugging hippy, nor a neo-nazi skinhead. She is a practical southern woman who's probably helped butcher more than a few animals.

If Sookie in a fit of passionate despair and panic shoots the person who killed her friend, having JUST wrested the gun from her opponent is the last straw, I'd say your metrics are off.

Season 4 had other faults of out-of character behavior and "this is stupid" moments (see the season 4 threads) than this one moment which actually makes a lot of sense.

Maybe it's those moments which have led to me feeling like this one is off?

It happened in the books, so I'm fine with it.

However, at the end of the last season, when Russell was chained to a pole and Sookie was yelling at him, she screamed an expletive in a much lower register than her typical voice. When she introducing Talbot to the Disposal, her maniacal giggling was also out of character... so perhaps those events are related to this event at the end of the current season?

That could be it.

My wife's read the books. She points out differences when they come up.

Some of the stuff in the books sounded stupid as well. So I think there's a few grains of salt that fans have to take.
