Thialand, mmmm.

I had never thought about getting a bootleg movie until the film industry started forcing me to watch anti piracy messages by the friggin stunt and set people. SW will be the first and possibly only pirate copy I ever purchase.

Who cares about the DVD extras. How many freaking specials have their been about the making of SW. How many times do you watch the extras? Once, rent the film from Blockbuster and watch that crap from there. I would love to see NO EXTRAs on every DVD I purchase. I just like movies and don't give a rats back side about those who made them.

I will not lie, I will buy the new DVD, but I will also buy an original version.

Han Solo not shooting first destroys the movie? He's still a mercenary who is only in it for himself until his change of heart at the end.

This is as bad as my nitpicking of the LotR movies...maybe worse!

No, George Lucas did. I'm not spouting hyperbole, I'm talking literally. According to the specialist in charge of restoring the negative to the original SW, that negative no longer exists period. Lucas chopped it up to make the SE without first having made a digital scan of the entire negative because he didn't want that version to exist ever again. A cinematic travesty.

As for Greedo shooting first, that just ruined that particular scene. I liked a lot of the alterations, but some are just awful. I'll post a film by film dissection tonight after work. And for those braced for another rant let me say I will actually be purchasing the SE's on DVD. I'll explain why but its a definite mixed bag, save for one of the films.

I already own a laserdisc player and the THX remastered versions of the OT, but I might be calling Thailand soon myself.

I thought Star Wars is a timeless story. Personally, I dont' care who shot first (although my opinion of Han the scoundrel would have lowered -- demote him to scum who bagged a princess -- than they are now if he did shot first) or that Luke have a girly scream (not exactly the kind of last heroic Jedi you want to place all your hope).

* tries to imagine the devoted SW fanboys with girly screams *

If GL -- who have always been his own harshest critics -- wants to redo his own work -- which apparently SW fanboys felt that it has become their own by some notion of entitlement -- then so be it. If that angers many fans to leave the franchise, then so be it.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm trying to find a clip of GL's 60 Minutes interview where he cried and apologized to the fans for introducing Jar Jar Bink.

I work in an Fine Art Gallery, I work with Artists and original works by Artists who are no longer alive (Picasso, Chagall, Miro, etc.) and I can't imagine any artist in this medium who would go back and "Touch Up" a masterpiece that they once created after it has sold in a major Auction house for Millions of Dollars.

As I look at it, it's not so much as somebody trying to update their masterpiece to please their audience or fan base because it can be better (because he would have never invented Jar Jar) as it is, somebody who is a perfectionist/control freak who can't let go of their work.

IMHO GL has created one masterpiece and after his "Touch Up", I have never expected him to create another.

Sadly, I fear that GL's last will includes orders to destroy all remaining copies of the original versions. His disrepect for history knows no bounds. I don't care if he revises the films till he has Jar Jar destory the Death Star in A New Hope. It's his desire to eliminate the movie that I watched as a child, that became part of the cultural fabric back in '77, that's what I despise about the man.
It must be hard to hate and love the guy at the same time. ;)

Not so hard. It's the same for me with Wizards of the Coast.

Love their RPG ... err, more or less.
Hate their TCG (and the fact that they started his hobby) with a passion.

:D

I will buy the DVDs. No question and as soon as I can. If they come out with the unaltered originals on DVD I will buy those. If GL creates another version with even more changes on DVD I will buy those. I love Star Wars. I am a Fanboy.
I don't like Greedo shooting first, I don't really like the Jabba scene (except another chance to see Fett) but I love the cleaned up and added shots of the Death Star battle and the additional scene in the hangar.

It doesn't matter. I love Star Wars. One of the biggest reasons I want the DVDs is for the SOUNDS!!! I disagree with people that will be ok with VHS or DVDs with no THX/Dolby. I want the SOUND!!! The music, the blasters, the TIE fighters, lightsabers. I want those sounds in all their glory!
