Hey, I am a real Startrek fan! I possess the novel! (And also the one with the planet full of dilithium where everybody sings or tells poems)

I seem to remember an explaination why the Holodecks still worked - the used some kind of energy which couldn`t be used by the other systems. Obviously, this is just a "TECH" explaination so that the writers are able to make Holodeck episodes ...

I think it also had something to do with morale. They did ration it along with replicators and such. Otherwise, you had to eat hydroponic output and whatever crap they dug up on planets after Neelix strained it through his scivies...
