It is BAD, very, very bad. If you liked the first one you'll hate this movie!

I loved the first one, and thought this was actually OK, for a made-for-TV thing. Diff'rent strokes, I guess.

And I definitely thought that it could be adapted to form the basis of a pretty cool one-shot horror rpg :)

In this case, there is a substantial possibility that you will actually throw up your soul while watching ST2. I doubt that the studio would pay damage, though.

Unfortunately, Starship Troopers 2 is pretty terrible, whether you're a fan of the movie (and I'm not) or a fan of the book (which I am.) What's really disappointing is that it's directed by Phil Tippett, the guy who brought us some of the most wonderful special effects in the whole history of cinema. He made it to basically show off his directorial skills so that he'd be able to direct bigger budget films. I really had high hopes for him.

Duly noted. ;)

That seems to be pretty consistent. Most Heinlein fans usually can't stand the movie, and that is the boat I'm in.

If the film was saddled with a different title, I would probably have been able to stomach it.

[rant] If I here one more fan of the film claim that it's critics "just don't get it" I am going to pull their lteeth out through their rectum. The "point" of the film was far too clumsy & heavy handed not to get, the problem is that Verhoeven didn't get it.

*sigh* [/rant]

I like Heinlein's work (especially Troopers) and I like the movie just fine. A lot of my friends are similar. But then, we aren't judging it as an adaption of the novel (it really isn't one), but as "over the top action nonsense".

Besides, it has Dooguie Howser, SS. What's not to like about that? :D

Actually, I think Verhoeven got the book just fine (it's not that much more subtle than the film), completely disagreed with it, and made the movie the way he did for precisely that reason.

But in any case, this thread is about the not-really-a-sequel, which is a fair to middling action/horror movie. Watch it on that basis, and it's reasonably enjoyable. Watch it as a Heinlein purist, and you'll hate it :)

How do you square this assessment with Veerhoven's statement that he only read the first twenty pages of the book? How do you "get" a book when you don't even complete the first chapter?

Then for "Verhoeven" read "Verhoeven and Neumeier". Neumeier wrote the screenplay (and has worked with Verhoeven a lot in the past). Someone read and understood the book. The movie contains too many deliberate distortions of the book's events and themes for them to be an accident.

I'm not saying you have to like the movie, or what the chose to do :). I'm just saying that they made it the way they did with intent, not because of a lack of understanding of the original text.

If anything, that might make those who hate it, hate it more :)
