Static Saves

No sir, I don't like it. "Saving throw" is a sacred cow I didn't know I loved until they aimed at it.

But it's even easier to house rule than a default pantheon, so I'm not too worried about it.

Sacred cows need to be sacrificed.

It effectively turns fireball into an instakill for a mob, assuming that full damage is enough to kill each orc.

Fireball's already an instakill for a mob; half damage is usually enough to kill each orc.

... in 3E. I'm guessing that they'll be nerfing 4E blast spells somewhat; no point in this new emphasis on big groups of monsters if a fireball can take out the lot of them. In fact, they've already stated that fireball will no longer do 1d6/level.

And isn't that the purpose of fireball?
I always hated when I wasted my fireball on all those pesky mooks, wishing to clean up the room, and then the lucky DM saved at least half of them. Two fireball is too costly for this job, one should be enough.
4E is just getting better and better. ;)

Why? Did they say anything that make us believe that?
As said, they're changing fireball to no longer deal 1d6/level. And furthermore, also as said, there wouldn't be much point in the emphasis on large groups of monsters if a single blast spell could take out the lot of them.

I've seen in WOTC forums a guy said that in Mike Mearls game in Gencon the fireball was dealing 4d6+21 points of damage.

I think the point is to have a lotta fun :D and just because the emphasis is on more monsters, it doesn't mean they will be all the same monsters with same HP and same reflex and stay all together in a 20ft radius circle.
If you have that situation, and also have the right character, with the right spell at the right time, you should really have over the top results!
