5E Storm King's Thunder

Aremus was level 8 in my personal notes, but some how still level 7 on the RG page. We must have levelled up at some point that a lot of us missed...

It takes several days of flying through the stormy, freezing skies above The Purple Rocks, but eventually you all spot a bizarre-looking yet seaworthy vessel with a hull that resembles a giant squid. As it plies the Trackless Sea, the top of the forward stabilizing fin remains above the water while the aft tentacles trail behind underwater.

At your airships current height, you remain undetected for the moment. It would take a perception check to determine how many sailors are on deck, but you can all immeditely tell that there is no storm giant in sight.
 

Aremus gave a rousing speach to his crew about how they'd be victorious. He plagiarized liberally from popular pirate and naval tales, and when he finished, he called, "Man the ballista and fire a warning shot over their bows! We'll give them a chance to surrender peacefully before we keel haul 'em!"

(He didn't actually know what that meant, and he would have been horrified to find out).

Dren moved to the rail at the bow and peered down at the squid-shaped ship below them. “Anybody got a glass?” the dwarven monk asked as he peered down, trying to get an idea of the numbers they were going to face.

"Do we just drop down on them? Do we even bother with negotiating? We should have thought about taking some barrels of oil or big stones to drop on them."
Ordrar studies the situation
"Maybe dropping them a message would be more impressive if they don't see anything but the message. Especially if it simply says 'We're watching you.' Then we do several such surprises over several days. Let's see what they do."
 

Dren: You'd see a 11 people total on the deck, four of which are stationed at ballistas facing different directions. You would also notice that the center of the ship is open, which provides a view of the inside. There you would glimpse a giant blue humanoid tied up in chains.
 

"Belay the warning shot!" ordered Aremus when Dren reported (he was happy to use another nautical term), "We must pounce like a cat! Fire the ballista at their ballista! I'm taking us in!"

He directed the helm to swoop down on the enemy, eager to accomplish the rescue mission.

“There be a giant there,” Dren told the others. “We shuild take oot those ballistas.”

OOC: As soon as they are within about 80 feet above the other ship.


As the airship dove, Dren calculated the distance. Then he ran for the rail, planted his foot, and leaped off. He spread his arms, his loose clothing catching the air, and using his mastery of elements to direct the wind to slow his fall.

OOC: At 60’ above.


Dren called on the powers of air and earth, and the loud sound of a gong exploded over the nearest ballista and its operator.

OOC: Targeting the ballista and operator with Shatter. Con save DC 15. Shatter damage: 3D8 = [1, 2, 4] = 7

"Exactly, Dren! Their ballista! Would you go and fire ours at one? Dren? Dren!" Aremus steered the ship while the dwarf disappeared over the rail.
 


"Ah, there you go, my other dwarf friend!" called Aremus to Ordrar, "Fire away! A very palpable hit, I do believe! Huzzah!"

OOC: Ballista are +6 to hit and deal 3d10 damage, IIRC. So a 19 ought to do it. Dren's Shatter should work well too, as objects have disadvantage on the save.

Tranio holds on to one of the gunwales, looking down on the ballistas below. Before he is aware, one has been fired. He readies a bless spell in case there's another shot.
 


Dren: To the astonishment to both ally and enemy, the dwarf fearlessly leaps over the railing and dives 80 feet towards the prey below. The operator of the ballista is caught completely off guard by the magic gong (rolled a 7) and is launched into the ocean below. The ballista (rolled a 9 with disadvantage) still stands but took damage from the attack as well. (Is Dren landing on the top level with the ballistas or does he want to ride down to the deck / below deck with the giant?)

Ordrar: Your shot would hit. Which ballista would you like to target? The red dot is the unmanned one that Dren just attacked.

Dren's intention is to unman all the balistae so they can't shoot us out of the sky, so he will land as close as he can to the next closest ballista.

OCC: Don't cross the dwarves!

Ordrar:
Your aim is true and your bolt strikes the ballista and operator on the platform opposite Dren. The man is instantly killed and the ballista takes damage.

Ballistas:
There are two remaining ballista operators. It takes a full action to aim the weapon. The remaining one on the same platform as Dren turns his deadly weapon towards the dwarf in front of him. The enemy on the other platform aims the massive crossbow at the balloon in the air.

Dren ignored the ballista aimed at him. He focused across the length of the ship to the other ballista that was aiming at the balloon of their airship. He extended his hand and spoke the words of the universe he had learned from his meditations, and the air around the other ballista shattered with the loud sound of a gong once more.

Then Dren settled into a defensive position and extended his hand again, wiggling his fingers to tell the ballista operator to bring it on.

Shatter: DC 15 Con save. Ballista takes double damage
Shatter damage: 3D8 = [1, 7, 8] = 16

OOC: After casting Shatter (super expensive!), Dren spends another ki for Patient Defense (Dodge action) as his bonus. For his reaction, if the ballista hits him, he will Deflect Missiles to reduce the damage, and if the damage is reduced to 0 he will spend 1 ki to return the ballista bolt back at the operator.
Deflect Missiles: 1D10+13 = [8]+13 = 21

"That will show them, Dren!" called Aremus from the rail as he flung the airship's anchor over the side.

OOC: He plans to attach the anchor to some sturdy part of the other ship and slide down the cable. What would you like me to roll?
