Yeah, that's pretty strong writing.

The notion that the Superman Family knows there are more Kryptonians out there is a pretty modern idea. I think we can expect to see more Kryptonians, particularly Zod, in the future, but they will have had some way of surviving the death of Krypton that Kal and Kara didn't know about.

I honestly prefer this to the status quo in current Superman comics, where there are whole planets of Kryptonians out there now which feels like a lot to me, as someone who grew up (and subscribed to Superman) during the Silver Age. If your only way of challenging Superman is to toss someone as strong as he is at him, you probably aren't really up to the challenge of writing Superman.
Given that they've gone back to a more hopefully Boy Scout style Supes, maybe they'll bring in Kandor?

Yeah, I saw some folks conflating Kandor with Argo City in the trailer. It's certainly a good way to bring in more Kryptonians and, IMO, the Silver Age really underused the possibilities of Kandor. (Superman and Jimmy Olsen dressing up as Nightwing and Flamebird and fighting crime, Batman and Robin style, is probably the most long-lasting element of the storyline, since that inspired Dick Grayson's post-Robin identity. Deeply cringeworthy, even at the time, as great of an identity as Nightwing has become.)

If Brainiac is the villain in the next Superman movie (which we're apparently not supposed to call a sequel for some reason), that would be a great way to set up a new group of Kryptonians with some very different ideas.

All those James Bond movies are each standalone films featuring the same characters and situations and sometimes the consequences of previous films, and not sequels!
Early on Gunn had said that it wasnt really a Superman movie in the same way that Superman was.

we will see how true that is i guess

But also whether something is a sequel is an odd question sometimes. Are later Sherlock Holmes stories sequels of the first one, even when the story doesnt directly relate to and follow directly from the first one? I would argue no.
