Trailer Superman Teaser Trailer

I'm glad the supers are already established in this movie. I don't need or want an origin story movie or series for every character that gets introduced. I get why the MCU did that - for people less familiar with supers comics. But 12 years after the Avengers movie I feel supers are commonly understood enough to not have to do an introduction arc for everyone.
But… but… how will I ever find out how Spider-Man got his powers? And Batman? When will they finally tell us his backstory? Bitten by a radioactive bat? Immigrant from distant world of bat-people? Nobody knows!

Aronofsky had a version of Batman he was working on that was a complete shakeup.

Despite his pedigree, nothing about it sounded even vaguely exciting.

It can be surprisingly hard sometimes for artists to recognize when the fundamentals are rock solid and should be left more or less alone (Batman, Superman) and when they're kind of a mess and would really benefit from a dramatic rethink (Hawkman).

If the fundamentals are sound, just do a great job spring-boarding off that.

For lesser known characters showing up as support, this can be a bit of a problem. In this movie, i imagine we will get a pretty good origin story for Terrific, but very little for Hawkgirl (I dread the social media relevant jokes...) and Gardner. Gardner in particular has a complex origin, not to mention how kind of out there the Corps is all by itself.

Don't get me wrong, I think Gunn can tell a good story and make these characters compelling without that (he has proven he can do so in both Guardians and Suicide Squad) but it might be disappointing for more casual fans if they never got those stories.

I am a huge fan of Gardner, starting with the JLI years, and I think Fillion has proven he can play a pompous ass well. I just feel like the old school haircut just doesn't work on screen. Nowadays, there are a variety of toxic masculinity haircuts Guy could have that would telegraph what he's about better than his distracting bowl cut does.

The trouble re: Marvel and introduction arcs is that they've said a number of times over the last few years that they're "not going to do them anymore", but they just keep doing them! They can't help themselves! She-Hulk was meant to start in media res and only go to her getting her powers like in the mid-season, but nope, Jessica Gao got told to just rip that episode out of place and put it as the first one (leading to it having underbaked CGI and poor editing/pacing), presumably by Feige, and after he'd been saying "We trust audiences, we don't need to do origin stories!" for like, years, at that point.
For TV, I'm not really a fan of the mid-season origin story. In the Netflix shows, they pretty much always broke the flow of the seasons. But then again, I maintain that they would have been better as proper-length seasons (20+ episodes) with primarily episodic content with plot building up in the background. You know, like Buffy.

As for MCU movies, I think the one that handled its origin story the best was The Incredible Hulk.

I just looked at the first appearance of Dr. Fate and he was using his abilities without speaking backwards. Are you perhaps confusing him with Zatanna and her father who do speak their spells backwards?
That is why I said more like Mandrake and used an example, sorry I was unclear. I didn't have anything at hand.

I wasn't talking about rolling Hawkman and Hawkgirl together but the "ancient Egyptian prince/princess" and the "Thanagarian police" versions. I've seen more than one attempt to do that, and didn't think any of them worked.
Oh yeah, post Zero Hour Hawkman and then Johns did it when he brought back the Golden Age Hawkman in The Return of Hawkman, then Venditti & Hitch with their all his incarnations at the same time take. I think only Johns was successful with that whole mess. It shouldn't even be a part of the Thanagarian thing.
