It seems inappropriate that Kobolds aren't still in the mix. Oh, well. All of the remaining candidates seem deserving. In my current campaign, it's gnolls for sure, but they look doomed. Think I have to go with the timeless classic.

Maybe they are, but it's all relative...

We just finished the 80s classic UK3 The Gauntlet - the Hobgobs are the fodder when the general is a Fire Giant
Gotta be honest, I've never went up against hobgoblins so I can't speak for their foddery.

I've run a few encounters with them. What stands out with the 5e version are their high defenses - even the standard hobgoblins have an AC of 18. Combined with some useful tactical abilities, they feel a little too resilient to be considered simple cannon fodder.

Apart from the 80s classic UK3 The Gauntlet, it is not clear to me where the hobgoblin love is coming from. Those pushing them: tell us why they're so great! Please. I played a Hobgoblin bard for a short while in 3.5, but they never have struck me as having achieved their potential.

Sell us on them!

EDIT: Just to be clear, I rather like hobgoblins - I particularly like what Eberron did with them as heirs to a fallen empire. If I was voting for "best monster" from this list they'd be neck-and-neck with orcs. But as "most appropriate as cannon-fodder" they're too classy for that category.

Clearly, if they hadn't mutated the Kobolds from dogs to dragons then they would have won, I've have supported them anyway...

But in the absence of proper Kobolds, I'm going for the Hobgoblin - I'm a DM, I prefer to throw organised bands of Hobgobs at my players than random stinking rabbles of the other 3.

For me, they stay fodder for a couple more levels then goblins so I remember them more as fodder I guess
