Y'know, if the goal is to get your favorite option to win, you want to make the contest end as quickly as possible. The longer the contest lasts, the more votes everyone gets, and the more chances everyone gets to downvote your favorite.*
So instead of downvoting the leader (which will cause your downvote to almost immediately get replaced, and therefore less important), a better strategy is to downvote the lowest-scoring item instead of the leader. That downvote will be less likely to be replaced, and will make the contest end more quickly. And a quicker end means fewer votes, which means fewer chances for others to downvote your favorite.
*Unless your favorite falls to last place. Then I don't know what to tell you.
