Swords of the bastard kind

Now to try and throw a spanner into the works, if you can wield a bastard sword with two hands as a martial weapon, can you wield a sword one handed if you have the monkey grip feat? You can wield a greatsword, but what about the bastard version :D

You must be hungover!

Greatsword - 2-hands - Martial Weapon
Bastard Sword - 2-hands - Martial Weapon

Is this good enough ?

I'm sorry if this was answered earlier in this thread and I missed the answer but isn't the question do you have to get Weapon focus twice? once a 2 handed and once for 1 handed.

I say no; a fighter with WF bastard sword but with no EWP Bastard sword would have a -3 penalty to attack with the sword one handed. and a +1 to attack 2 handed. once he go the EWP they would be the same.

but depending on his strength he would do more damage with 2 hands.

Remember, you have to take Monkey Grip once for each weapon, like, say, Weapon Finesse.

So if you're going to spend a feat to use a bastard sword one-handed... why would you ever choose the one that gives you a -2 penalty to your attacks?

One more time... a Medium creature without the EWP cannot use a Bastard Sword one-handed. At all. No -4 penalty... they just cannot physically swing the thing.

My instinct says if they can lift it over their head, they should be able to swing it, albeit at a heavy penalty. If a character can swing a greatsword, why not a bastard sword?

thanks for the link to that thread. after reading that I retract my statements. I was thinking:

Bastard Sword = Medium sized weapon either martially or exotic.

But now its all clear, it can be considered either a large martial weapon or a medium exotic weapon.

Thanks

Since no one else has brought it up, perhaps I need to point out the following: The last Official FAQ update included a ruling that without Exotic Weapon Proficiency (bastard sword), a medium-sized character is entirely prohibited from using the weapon one-handed.

Personally, this surprised me, but when I pointed it out in another thread, almost no one else seemed to be.
I believe I was surprised, too, FWIW. :)

I think it makes sense, afterall I can't swing a greatsword one-handed EVER. ITs not a penalty thing, I just can't do it.
A bastard sword is a two-handed weapon. Using it one handed is an exception that requires special training to be able to do at all.

Yes, you can.

You swing in one hand when you thrown it.

Or you could cast Righteous Might or Polymorph to large size, pick up the Greatsword and swing it to your heartscontent.

(Do not write EVER, if you are not certain).
