“Getting them to safety would be good,” Errol agreed. “They have been through enough. We can cover the rear, be aware of those following us. I can keep them at bowshot.”

Errol went around to the refugees, encouraging them to keep on just a bit farther. Soon enough they would be safe.

OOC: Inspiring Leader: Up to 6 friendly creatures get 6 thp.

Small figurine of a one-eyed orc (Gruumsh)(Held by Illvelious)
Ring of Fire Resistance (Held by Errol)
Silver ruby ring (600 gp)(Held by Errol)
Reszor, magical rapier - Rapier (uncommon), requires attunement (Held by Errol)
Reszor was commissioned by a soldier turned assassin to enhance his ability to kill without being detected. It has a star motif etched into the blade and the handle is of blue leather. Dried blood clings to the blade and cannot be cleaned off. The weapon counts as magical and when you make an attack against on opponent while hidden the attack will make no noise. Additionally, when you make an attack with this weapon and get to use bonus damage dice, such as superiority dice or sneak attack dice, roll an additional die and discard the lowest. When you say the command word "Reszor" the blade will glow with dim light out to a 5ft radius, saying the command word again will turn the light off. Finally there is a mild curse on the blade that drives the wielder to kill. After rendering an opponent incapacitated or unconscious make a DC7 WIS saving throw to stop yourself from killing the creature.

Feeling better for the short break, Ilvellios took the lead, guessing that he could rapidly get to the rear if needed, and wanting to keep an eye out at the front in case the enemy had somehow got in front of them. He adapted to the speed set by Sir Joran, trying not to push the refugees to keep up with him, and carefully kept alert for trouble.

Desairn Valley, Day 8, Morning

The group of escapees sets off led my Illvillious. They make painfully slow progress, even following the road. At first you spot your tail, trying to follow undetected, but as time wears on they disappear from sight.

You should have reached Beliard by lunch time, but the slow progress made by the escapees means that you have barely reached Stone Bridge.

[LQ]This gigantic stone archway (two miles long and four hundred feet high) comfortably spans the widest spring flood of the Dessarin River. It is a sacred site of pilgrimage for many dwarves. Long ago, the dwarf god Moradin appeared atop the Stone Bridge to rally dwarves of the Ironstar clan against a horde of ores. The founder of Besilmer, King Torhild Flametongue, died fighting a hill giant atop the Stone Bridge. (He is entombed within the Halls of the Hunting Axe.) Built to connect those parts ofthe dwarven realm of Besilmer on both the western and eastern banks of the Dessarin, the Stone Bridge is made of smooth, fused hard granite. It is only six paces wide and lacks railings or barriers, so anyone atop it is at the mercy of the wind, particularly in winter. Reason to Visit. The Stone Bridge is the only crossing of the Dessarin River between Ironford and Yartar; travelers and caravans frequently use it (with care). [/LQ]

In your case the stone bridge also offers the terrifying prospect of an ambush. The approach makes for a good opportunity for the Earth cult to try and recapture their prisoners, and the bridge itself is devoid of cover, offering the Earth cult the chance to attack you in a very exposed position.

"Not good, but if an ambush is being planned here, how far and fast would they have had to move in order to cross the river elsewhere and still beat us to the other side?

Now, I don't mind taking a horn and running to the other side? One blast means it's clear, two means the cultists are there, three blasts means the others.. Wait, what?"

He shakes his head,
"An alternative approach would be to assume the worst, what are our options in that case?"

"I could turn into a giant octopus and carry you all across elsewhere down the river truly confusing our trail and hopefully lose them forever." Duran's face had a odd grin plastered on it possibly imagining a giant octopus carrying a group of people over a river.

Day 7/Near dawn
Round 0

Errol studied the stone bridge warily, not liking the look of it. “How fast and terrible is the river?” he asked. “Could we ford it?” They would likely still be exposed. “We could camp and try and cross at night. Either way, I can try and cover us.” Two miles in the open was going to be difficult.

The river is nowhere near it’s spring flood but it is navigable by large river craft all year round. Swimming across would most likely result in the deaths of several people. Even the five of you, well rested and fed, wouldn’t try swimming the river except in the most desperate of circumstances
