Tavern - City of Orussus, The Red Dragon Inn '08

Jamilee's dead quiet for about two beats, her face slack; then it's back to grinning. "Of course I can fix what's hrbroken. It sort of follows. Besides, what hrrgrarrior hrrorth his salt can't?"

Her crow's beady eyes answer Jerrand's errant looks defiantly, while it mutedly quorks and warbles to itself - but whatever it was planning, it finally seems to decide it's not worth the trouble. It breaks eye contact with the proud Selite, and hops over to its mistress' mug instead.

Suddenly, a young man of perhaps sixteen years dashes into the tavern, soaked to the bone from the violent rainstorm outside. His long brown curls cling to his face pathetically, and his simple tunic is completely sodden with rainwater.

"Adventurers! Guards! Anyone! Can someone help me, please? orcs are attacking my father, just outside!"

OOC: Yeah, this is an adventure hook. But it's a small one - sort of a spin-off of my "Search for Tomas Quinn" Adventure. It's open to all classes, though melee and fighter types will do best. It will be a very small adventure - three encounters at most. A month or so in game time, I guess. Mostly, this is a chance for the inexperienced to have a shot at PbP.

The adventure is open to all character levels, but 1st level characters get precedence. Beyond that, it's first come, first serve. I'm a GM who posts maybe two or three times a week (sometimes more, sometimes less).

OOC: In short, no you cannot. Not until he's approved. And, yeah, buffing PCs before they go into a fight is, well, kinda lame in this case.

That being said, why aren't you approved? There should be no problem. And, if you wanna join, feel free - we can rush you getting approved after you start. I'm sure that'll be fine. Just post something on the general discussion gently reminding judges Jerrand hasn't got the okay yet, and start playing!

The door opens and a man enters, trailed by a halfling clutching a sheaf of papers. The man is tall and burly, with close-cropped brown hair and a neatly trimmed beard with a generous sprinkling of gray. His tunic features a subtle geometrical pattern in brown on gold, and looks both new and expensive. He surveys the room with a disapproving scowl.

"I'm Alvar Thorne, entrepreneur and..." He stops and grins wolfishly. "Well, maybe more, but we won't get into that just now. I would like to hire a group of capable and discreet individuals for a certain task; one that I would prefer not to have gossiped all over town. Nothing illegal or immoral" -- he draws the last word out derisively -- "merely something that would adversely affect my interests were it to become prematurely public knowledge. There may be some danger associated with the task, so those unwilling to face a little risk need not apply. The reward will be... appropriate."

He looks around the room and frowns again. "Right now I'm just looking for names and skills of anyone interested. After I've assembled an appropriate group, we will avail ourselves of one of Joe's private rooms and I'll fill you in on the details. You will of course have an opportunity to refuse once you've heard the details, if you feel you're not up to the task. Joe, will you have something appropriate sent over? Thanks." He takes a seat at the head of an empty table and looks around expectantly.

[sblock=ooc adventure info]This adventure is for characters at level 1 or 2. I believe it can be completed with a balanced party of 4, but it may be on the difficult side. Between that and PbP attrition rates being what they are, I'd rather start with 6 or so. It's a medium-ish (as opposed to short or long) adventure, leaning more towards dungeon crawl than deep roleplay.[/sblock]

[sblock=more ooc]Wik, I'm not trying to step on your toes, really. I thought about sitting on this for a week or two to see what kind of response you got, but then I thought that, as a player, if there are two adventures starting at nearly the same time, I'd rather have a choice than have it be simply down to the luck of who posted first. So, hopefully we can work something out so that everyone is satisfied.[/sblock]

"Ye wayward swag-bellied joithead!" growls Gildrim. "Did ye nae see thes lad's faither fightin' fer his life wi' orcs out thaur jusnoo?"

The dwarf lays down his chicken. "Ah'll be back fur that," he says. "Haur, laddie, hae ye nae.... Hem. Here, lad, have you no weapon of your own? Take this. It's a lot better than nothing." He lays a morning star on the table. Then deliberately he readies his shield, draws his longsword, and looks to his table companions.

"Thes is whit comes ay lettin' e'en ain orc walk freely in Orussus," he says. "It willnae tak' mair than a coople ay us, an' then we can see what is so much more important to Alvar Thorne, entrepreneur and... whatever else." He spits on the floor.

Alvar blinks, surprises as much by the dwarf's accent as his words. "I saw no orcs, but I am assured that the city watch are capable of dealing with any such infestation. They assure me of this every time I pay my taxes. And yet, here we are. Well, if you wish to do other mens' work for them, work for which they are well paid, I certainly won't stop you."

"An' they say that dwarrrves' heids ur filled wi' thooghts ay gauld," Gildrim sneers. "Ah'll be back suin an' then we'll hae a wee gab abit th' state ay yer sool."

"And yours, too," he adds in Halfling.

Jerrand jumped to his feet at the mention of trouble outside, his chair falling back with a loud "thunk". He grabs his helm slams it on his head and picks up his mace and shield. "I'm with you Gildrim," he says. Casting a frown at the man in fine clothes, but his face softens as he sees the boy as he barely lifts the morningstar off the table. "Ready?" Jerrand asks, and the boy nods his eyes on the spkies of the morningstars head. "Then let's go help your father."

ooc once Jerrand leaves The Red Dragon i'll have someone else come in to talk to Alvar is that o.k.??

OOC Covaithe: Geez, I thought you had already posted! I knew there was another adventure in the works, but I thought it had already been offered! Sorry, man. What I'll do, though, is pare my draw down to 3 PCs, maybe. I can edit the adventure a bit. After all, there's plenty of PCs to share, eh?

The boy turns to look at Alvar. "You didn't see any? There are... there are orcs just a block away!" he nearly screams.

Looking outside, you can understand why it'd be difficult to see anything on the streets of Orussus. Rain is coming down so heavily that you are not able to see the buildings on the other side of the road. Then, for effect, a distant bolt of lightning illuminates the black clouds that smother Orussus.

"Come with me! Please! My dad's not rich, but he's the only dad I have!" He gets ready to move towards the door.

OOC: One last call, for any adventurers.
