The Beast Within Re-recruitment [Dark*Matter D20 Modern]

I'm running a D20 Modern game loosely based on the Alternity Dark*Matter setting. Unfortunately, the Christmas break has thinned the numbers of my players down to just three, so I'm in need of some fresh blood...

Firstly, if you're not familiar with the setting, check out the Exit 23 adventure that we've just finished to see if it's for you. Then head over to the character thread to see who's already in the game, and the kind of people your PC would be working with. And then take a look at the current adventure The Beast Within. Still here? Still like what you see? Read on...

Character Creation rules:
  • 3rd level.
  • 32 point buy for ability scores.
  • Humans characters only.
  • Your starting Wealth score will be 5 + Occupation bonus + any feat or other bonuses.
  • Profession checks for Wealth gain at 2nd and 3rd levels are treated as if you'd rolled at 10.
  • Your character must work for the Hoffmann Institute in some capacity.

In addition to these rules requirements, I'm going to need a couple more things from you. Firstly, I want dedicated players. I'd like to be looking at a post rate of once a day from the players, or once every two days as a minimum. This isn't to say that I'm going to kick you out of the game if you go on holiday or have RL problems, but it does mean that I'll get a bit peeved if you don't post when you're able. I'd also like a list of any PbP games you've played here on EN World or elsewhere, so I can get an idea of your role-playing style.

Secondly, a decent background for your PC really helps the other players interact with your character. It doesn't have to be anything terribly detailed or interesting, but I'd like it if it gave some indication of your character's motives and general personality. Just stats and no history doesn't make a character, and is just plain lazy ;)

Right, if after all of that you still want to play (you fools! :D) then feel free to post here. If I get interest from more than three people I'm going to have to make a choice about who to keep. I'll be basing my picking on background, followed by how well the character fits with the rest of the group. Anyone who doesn't make it in this time round will still be on a list of alternates should anyone drop out of the game.

Thanks for reading this, and I look forwards to seeing your PCs :)

Jarval,
I'm very interested. I'm at work right now, but I'll edit this post with my character idea tonight when I get more of a chance to work on it.

Later,

Speaking as a player from the game, I encourage you all to join. It's a lot of fun (and I like my character, so I don't want the game to die :p).

I'd love to get in some more Dark Matter action. I'll get a character concept up after looking to see what roleplaying niches need filling. Who's still left of the original party?

As far as games I've been in, here's the list: (No, I'm not ambitious, just bored/addicted)

Here's my idea:

Lisa Taylor

Even as a child, Lisa was incredibly inquisitive. The dreaded "Why?" phase lasted from the minute she learned the word until well into 4th grade. Undaunted by the prospects of mud or frogs, no stone near the little duck pond was left unturned, nor did any corner of her attic (or those of her friends, or her cousins, or her friends' cousins, etc) remain unexplored. Unsurprisingly, she studied journalism, moving from her small town in upstate Minnesota to take classes at Columbia. After her graduation, she became an investigative journalist, specializing in the stories that took too much footwork for others. All that changed May 8, 2003.

Lisa had been working on a story on militias in Montana; this particular one had unusually cultish leanings, which she thought might help sell the story. Trying to infiltrate, though, she was found out. She says she doesn't remember what happened in the next two months; judging from what the police officers said she was babbling about when they found her, and from what the psychiatrists said later, that's probably for the best. Whatever it was, the Institute took an interest in her case, offering the finest private therapists if she went to work for them, continuing her investigative work. Amazingly, she accepted. She seems to have made a full recovery, though occasional flashes of a very different person have begun leaking out on occasion.

First off, sorry about not responding sooner. I've been having problems connecting to EN World for the last couple of days, but everything seems to be working again.

d'Anconia, Paxus Asclepius, E-Solution, glad to have you here. Write up your character concept, post it here, and I'll give it a look over. In all likelihood (that is pretty much anything baring blatant power gaming) I'll give it the OK, and you can join the game.

Paxus Asclepius, I really like the concept you've got for Lisa. Fits into the setting perfectly, and gives me some useful plot hooks. Stat her up, and you're set to go :)

Three questions: A) Why won't the board accept new posts? B) Is it all right that I took Defensive Martial Arts, rather than Brawl or Personal Firearms Proficiency, from the Investigative background? C) How exactly is requisitioning going to work? Lisa no longer owns anything but clothes, having lost most of her possessions (though not savings or stock) in the incident. At the same time, I imagine Hoffman can probably set her up with gadgets beyond her means.

A) No idea, although I've been having the same problem. Maybe it's a database problem?

B) Sure, go right ahead. DMA is on much the same lines as Brawl, so I can't see a problem.

C) To be honest, I'm not enforcing the Wealth rules all that strictly. As long as you don't have any equipment that vastly exceeds your Wealth, or is unrelated to your role in the Institute, I've not really got a problem with what you have. Just to be clear though, any requisitioned equipment still belongs to the Institute. If they decide to reclaim it, you'll have to hand it back or be accused of theft.

Jarval,

I don't currently have the d20 book at this time, but am planning on getting it in Feb to mid-Feb at the latest. I read the threads today, and really like the game you have going so far.

Would it be possible to sign up as an alternate until I get the book? As asking to take a slot before I have the goods might be too much to ask.

I would make links, but don't know how, but I am in a couple of DnD games on here. Lamentation of Lolth, Classic 3.0, Storms of Change, and Adventure Path series game run by KL.

Thanks...
