The Book of Vile Darkness -- bad idea?

This is ample illustration of why it's always good to read the whole thread before posting. I realize you're trying to be breezy and funny, but some of what you're writing about has not only been directly addressed earlier in the thread, but has been refuted. Also, someone insinuated some unflattering things about Monte that they felt were implied by the book's theme, which caused quite a bit of consternation, including from Monte himself. So your post, while engaging, seems kind of inappropriate given what's gone before. No offense intended.

I hear what you're saying Colonel, but on a topic like this I think everyone can just go ahead and voice their opinion, regardless of whatever has already transpired. I'm not trying to personally insinuate anything unflattering about Mr. Cook... it's all in good fun. I'll probably buy the damn book when it comes out, knowing me.

I understand the quasi-neccessity of reading all the posts over in the Rules section, but this General section is pretty much all about opinions, and I don't think what someone else already had to say should somehow prevent me from expressing mine, or makes my take "inappropriate". I mean... "refuted"? Refuted what?

Anyway... point is: I made it totally clear I hadn't read the seven or whatever pages of the thread. I just wanted to express my opinion regardless of "what's gone before", which is what the boards are kinda for, nes pa?

No offense intended, none taken.

I never thought fellow gamers would get all upset over a book devoted to evil. If the thought of evil makes one squeemish I wonder what kind of campaign they play in. Is it all unicorns and sprites and charisma checks as one sits around the campfire telling fairy tales?

It's not that the thought of 'evil' makes me squeamish. What I meant to say was that the thought of a book so incredibly evil that reading it could cause you to go insane (that must be pretty evil, right?) just seemed like probably the darkest thing in the whole game.

And yes, I get it: that's the point.

But how many published adventures have you seen the BoVD (from the DMG) in? I've never seen it. So why would you wonder that since such a book seems edgy to me, I would prefer to play in a campaign of lollipops and licorice or whatever you're insinuating.

I get really sick of the argument (from lot's of people) that basically says, "You're a wimp! You can't handle it!"

That's not what I'm trying to say; I'm not unable to handle the contents of this publication. I'm just saying it seems to me that all this stuff has been covered before. Am I blaspheming???

This is a discussion board, right?

Monte himself refuted that he'd had any long-held secret desire to write a book about killing baby seals (you know what I mean). That's what I meant; you'll see his assertion of this earlier in the thread. I agree with much of what you just posted, it's just that in this particular instance, with Monte's character being impugned, it seemed like your earlier post was inappropriate. It's kinda like people discussing the death of their mother, and moving on to other subjects, and then someone else coming along and saying "Cheer up! You're acting like somebody just died!" Doesn't make the person bad, but results in a bit of an awkward scene. That's all. Again, no offense intended, really.

Check out the first ravenloft Module Feast of Goblyns which WotC released as a free download (the first module after Ravenloft was a setting not the original module).

It became a plot point in my ravenloft campaign when Baba Yaga found out it was there and engineered a transfer of darklords to get access to it. Oh yeah, in Ravenloft it is more powerful than normal.

It keep me warm inside to see such obvious examples of ignorance from some of my fellow Americans. Keep it up, every time I read a post like yours I happily know there are still people around who are only suited for menial labor.

Ok; apparently, it was already too late to try and save the thread. :p

Still, thanks to anyone who stayed civil! :)
