The Breaking of Gavar IC Thread: Chapter 1: The Search for Helmdos

OOC: When you say "below" do you mean "directly below" or "the vibrations are muted in the air by the large body of water, but we feel them travelling through the stone beneath our feet 'below'?"

I mean that the machine sounds like it is coming from beneath you, but not directly beneath you. Best guess is there are multiple levels of tunnels, and the machine is on a lower level.

Saxon is suprised when Mzarem starts sniffing around.

"He's picked up a scent! That's pretty damn good under these conditions!" Saxon says cheerily, "Who says we follow?"

Saxon becomes a little worried by Mzarem's expression, his cheer fades.

"Sorry Vargo, what I meant to get across was, who wants to follow Mzarem?" he replies.

" Well I for one will trust the wolfs nose, for it tis better than yours or mine, especially in this befouled place" and with that Ashe moves to follow Mzarem slowly as not to slip on the wet stone.

Arin looks down the hole with obvious disgust etched on her face. "Do I HAVE to go down there? Is there anything I could do up here?" She looks around helplessly, then back at her companions, crinkling her nose again. *I never though adventuring would be so... stinky*

I presume Marcus will also go with you.

Arin: What are you doing? I had presumed you are staying in the kitchen, since you seemed not so inclined to get dirty down there in the sewers.

Following Mzarem, he leads you to the fork in the tunnel. you note that the water here is flowing to the left, but Mzarem's trail leads you up the right passage. The tunnel continues along straight, and at one point about eighty feet down it, you see a grated manhole opening onto Iron Street, above you. Mzarem sniffs around at the ladder leading upwards, then continues along a ways further, to a spot in the wall where a large iron ring has been affixed to the stonework. A rotting bit of rope is attached to this ring. Scuff marks on the walkway indicate a boat or other heavy object resting in the water next to the walkway at this point. Again, Mzarem sniffs about a bit, then seems confused as to which way to continue- he seems torn between the boat landing, and continuing along the pathway. Finally, he decides to continue along the pathway, and within a few moments, stops dead in his tracks and begins growling at the darkness outside your lantern's light reach. Gleaming dully in the darkness are three sets of feral red, twinkling eyes, and slowly, as you catch up with Mzarem, the forms of three huge, filthy rats can be seen. Each is hairless, with arcane symbols branded and scarred into their tough flesh. You note a few normal rats hugging the wall beyond these horrors... the normal rats almost seem like they are hanging back, ready to observe your reaction to the huge rats... who are slowly inching forwards.

"I hate rats" Ashe says drawing his rapier but otherwise inching backwards away from the rat pack.

[OOC Ashe is still holding his lantern in his offhand]

"OK!! ummm... well... that's new to me....." Marcus says as he draws his Bastard Sword and readies his shield.....

*Marcus steps up to recieve his foes in melee combat*
