D&D 5E The Fifth City - Episode 1: The Gathering

As they all walk back towards the Mage Corp residence, Amisi gets close to Felix and talks softly. "Is it possible that one of our new friends is the agent? Or perhaps even one of Sakai's entourage? There isn't much we can do tonight but we should keep our eyes open and research this more in the morning." She rubs her eyes as the approach the house. "Well, tonight was fun. Most of it anyway. Next time let's go out and try to not get killed at the end of it."

OOC: Long rest! Everyone is healed to full and regains spent spell slots (and anything else that rejuvenates on a long rest). It was dawn by the time the fight with the ruffians ended so it is now afternoon of the next day.

Lenya

Ambassador Delenn betrays only a hint of emotion upon hearing the name Windswords, but it is enough for Lenya to realize that is she is quite disturbed by this news.

"The Windswords never work alone. I fear there be another of their warriors in the city, still waiting to carry whatever their mission might be. I must ask you to remain close to your newfound allies. It seems they may be best equipped to thwart this plot."

Felix

The guards under Constable Garrus have cleaned up the scene of the fight and the blast. Garrus calls Felix in to compare notes.

"That tattoo on the balcony assassin marks him as a member of the Blood Ravens, an assassins guild that usually operates out of some of the border islands of the Tiefling Empire. This is the first time I've heard about them being here, though. See what else you can find out."

Veer

Ambassador Mollari is finally ready to see Veer. The ambassador is quite hung over, even as late in the day as it already is.

"Ah, there you are Veer. Good, good. I want you to find a fellow named Dell Varner for me. He promised to cover my bets last night and now...poof, he has vanished into the ether." He lowers his voice to a conspiratorial whisper, "I owe a rather disagreeable dwarf a fair sum of coin. It would not do for the tiefling ambassador to not repay his debts eh?"

Markus

After some research, Markus is able to determine that the partially destroyed ring he found after the battle was a Ring of Mind Shielding, a very illegal enchanted ring, at least in human territories.

Castagyr

After spending a restful night (actually morning) at the Corps of Magi estate, Castagyr sees Sakai again in the market square, alone. She looks right past him and continues on her way hurriedly, as if she doesn't recognize him at all.

Korgon and Amisi

After resting up and having a late breakfast, Korgon and Amisi find themselves alone in the house as everyone else has left, except Markus who is upstairs researching the damaged ring.

At breakfast that afternoon, Markus raises his hand during a time of every one being present to get their attention, "Listen every one. I found a ring at the fire ball last night . . . or rather this morning. I was magical before it was melted, an illegal enchantment. one of shielding the mind. This does not bode well. not at all.'

Veer is polite yet quiet, and and makes his excuses to leave the Mage Corp building shortly after breakfasting, and goes to visit Ambassador Mollari.

"Ah, er, yes, of course Ambassador," he says. "Dell... Dell Varner. I'll check it out right away." He turns to leave, pauses, and turns back. "By the way, um, Ambassador. I heard a , a rumour last night, apparently someone is out to assassinate ambassadors. I think it's a , you know, an elven internal matter, but maybe you should post some extra guards, just in case?"

If there are no further instructions he heads beck to the Mage Corp building with the intent of seeking out Felix, or at least someone who knows where the guard might be found.

Korgon and Amisi

After resting up and having a late breakfast, Korgon and Amisi find themselves alone in the house as everyone else has left, except Markus who is upstairs researching the damaged ring.

Amisi does not come out of her room until later in the morning, where Korgon finds her nursing a headache at the dining room table. "Well, last night was exciting. I'm not really sure how I ended up in that condition, I didn't think I drank too much but I suppose trying this drink and that added up. How are you feeling today?"

Castagyr awoke, finishing his morning (even if it was later than that) rituals and left the quarters with all his belongings.

He departed the Corps of Magi’s estate without making a fuss after being evicted and shown the door. It was not explained to why nor had he seen anyone else that he came in with yet that day. He left a message with the person escorting him from the premises that he could be found in or near the market square.

Castagyr was hungry and the hospitality of the Corps of Magi had ended without breaking his fast. While he was looking over the stalls of food, he spotted Sakai walking alone.

He thought that unusual, and hurried after her. “Milady Sakai!” he called, trying to get her attention.

Elves, as a rule, did not need much sleep, and Lenya had arrived at the Mage Corps house quite early in the morning. She appeared rested and entirely recovered from the night before- and she still carried her bow, even on the streets of the city.

Once inside, she waited until the others were up, apparently in some form of meditation. And once Markus had spoken, she offered a few words to those assembled. "I have been warned that the Wind Swords rarely act alone- there may be others in the city, and whatever plot they may have been working on may still be a threat, despite our efforts so far. If they can disguise themselves so effectively, and as you say, have means to shield their minds, they may be difficult to find. Is there any magic which can penetrate the shielding of such rings?"

Felix straggles in a little later than most having had a busy morning already. He pours a strong cup of tea and responds to Lenya, "I can't speak for magic, but we know a generous application of steel and fire will break the illusion and mind shield. It would be best to find them before we reach the point of such matters I suppose." He takes a sip of the hot tea and continues, "I had a talk with Bishop Farrick over at the Church of the Sun Trident and his examination of the body of the man with the crossbow suggests that he was in fact human. That tattoo of his suggests he is a member of an assassin's guild known as the Blood Ravens. They haven't previously operated here in the Fifth City. Their home base is over close to the Tiefling Empire on the border islands. Any of you every heard of them or had any dealings? I suspect we have more Blood Ravens and Wind Swords here. I've been tasked with looking into the Blood Ravens. Any help would be greatly appreciated."

"So, to know our enemy as they say, Who are these wind swords? What, at the risk of getting an answer of nothing, can you tell us of this group of sword wielding wizards?"

First Post
"The Wind Swords are a warrior clan, what some might call 'dark elves'- while I know little of the sect directly, most of the warrior clans are adept with both magic and with weapons. Apparently in this case, spells of disguise and perhaps alchemy, whatever caused that final explosion. It seems unlikely to be coincidence to have both elves and human assassins in the same place- I suppose we must wonder if one group is manipulating the other, or if someone else is using both groups for some purpose." Lenya paused, and looked around at the others. "Whoever is behind this, I would guess that they would not expect such a, shall we say, 'diverse' group as this would be working against them. Perhaps that will be to our advantage... In any case, we must assume that there are more Wind Swords, at least, and while their plot may be delayed, I do not think we have stopped it. Perhaps we might ask the tiefling ambassador, or his staff, if they have heard rumors of the Blood Ravens, if those folk are based near their islands..."
