The GF in the Game

Yaknow, there are actually people out there, who can act in a mature fashion. I like to believe (hope? :p) they are in the majority. :D

Maybe in fancy-pants Europe, but in 'Mur-kuh, not really. Not in my experiences bearing witness to S.O.s in games, except for the most recent one I'm in. :heh:

Ugh. Yet again this topic rears its ugly head.

Players need to get over the idea that the GM can be completely impartial toward every player in the game. Even if you don't have girlfriends/spouses/significant others involved, there's bound to be some kind of relationship that will cause the GM to react more favorably to some players than others. Haven't anyone ever seen a GM treat his brother or his best friend from high school just a little bit better than the other players?

Even if there's no other type of relationship going on, a GM is going to find certain players more tolerable than others. And if he likes the guy sitting next to him, while he may not give that guy extra loot or more time in the spotlight, he'll probably laugh more at that player's jokes or listen more carefully to what that player says.

Don't expect a GM or player to treat a significant other exactly the same as everyone else. If you expect that you're going to be disappointed. But most GMs are capable of keeping the relationship from taking over the game. Give them a break if occasionally they lose their objectivity when it comes to the significant other. The GM has to spend more time with his girlfriend than you do. Do you really want him to have to sleep on the couch for a week because he killed his girlfriend's PC? :)

I think each individual situation is different. I have had some very bad experiences with romance screwing up a game, but a number in which it played no part or enhanced the situation.

It is far worse for a GM to have a GF that doesn't game, and doesn't want him to, than to have a GF that eagerly participates in RP as a shared activity.

Immature GMs suck, regardless of whether their SO games or not.

Is it me or is the biggest problem a DM could have is a gf or significant other as a player?

My wife has been playing in my games and DMing games that I play in for several years.

It's never been a problem.

Mostly I just started this thread to get people talking . . . . however . . . .

I have played in 4 games where couples were involved. The first was with my ex and her new husband. They're arguements during my games were so bad I had to stop them from throwing my books at eachother.

The second was in a game I played at my best friend's. They didnt' start as a couple but they apparently fell in love at his games. The end result was them dissappearing (toghether) on us.

The two good cases are my best friend's (now fiance) who is an excellent player, better than some at the table, everyone has no problem getting along with here.

And the other good case is my gf. We have a lot of arguements around the table, mostly due to the fact that she constantly thinks im lying about rules, but for the most part shes ok. Shes a good gamer she just doesn't like my style of play apparently.

So its always been 2 outta 4 for me, I was wonderin if its as wierd for other people, and apparently Ozmar and myself are really the only ones who have problems with it.

"Wheres my magical gavel of shut the H3|| up?"

with mature couples? No problem at all. I've never had a problem with it.

Heck my wife's character just died last night with me as DM. No problems.

That's what you say now. Don't be surprised if you find salt in your coffee and all of your left shoes missing.

My wife doesn't play, but if she did, I'd like to think that I'd be fair and impartial enough to kill her character off if she hogged all the covers and kept jabbing me with her ice cold feet the night before, just like I would with the rest of my players.

Is it just me or did it get sexy in here? :uhoh:

Nikroecyst - you aren't quite as alone as you might think. I have had a couple of games ruined by incompatible couples. The 2 sets of couples just didn't get along and it ruined one game and forced one group to completely sever all ties to anyone for years afterwards. Not pretty. I am happy to say that my wife and I do get along at the game table and I try very hard not to show favourtism whenever possible.
