Monte Cook has also recently written that he doesn't like the Harm spell. (Click here for the whole article: http://www.montecook.com/diary.html )

Here are the pertinent quotes: "There are some things that I think are simply unbalanced in the core rules. After years of further play, I just don't like how they work anymore...I don't think you should use...lots of spells -- harm, haste, true resurrection, find the path, and more. A few feats, like the aforementioned Rapid Shot. Some of the stuff you can get with summon monster or planar ally. And more. You won't find them in Arcana Unearthed, at least not in the forms you're used to."

Revised D&D Core Books: *yawn*

Monte's Arcana Unearthed: Bring it on! :)

If Monte didn't like the spell, why'd he put his name on the cover? Perhaps he'd like to sell more copies of Unearthed Arcana? Hmmm? All copies of said book, by the way, have been removed and burned from the S.H.I.N.Y. library. We're currently storing the ashes in what was once Tom Cashel's office.

Hard to burn something that hasn't been printed yet :)

He also said that this is something that he's "grown to feel". I'm sure that he thought it was balanced back when the PHB was finished, but now after playing the game for awhile he does not. Doesn't bother me if you feel it's balanced or not, there are just too many designers that do not that makes me feel that my opinion isn't too far off base either.

This belongs in D&D Rules, I believe.

And how do I know if this pained Gary Gygax? Because according to photo evidence from that reliable reporter, P.A., Gary Gygax is Eric Noah's son, and Eric would be the first to know. :D

Note that Tom asked: "Second, how do you know what pain resides in the heart of Gary Gygax?"

My question to him would be: "In the first place, how do you know he's got a heart?" He's a DM after all. He's the DM: he's responsible for the death of millions of PCs, of zillions of NPCs! And I can tell you: it doesn't prevent him from sleeping at night. Only the thought of his half-fiend father sometimes does.

Read it more carefully next time....

Wow, sarcasm...

If it wasn't sarcasm, Tom (and somehow I can't imagine otherwise ;) ), I think Spikey was referring to the years of unofficial "playtesting" that Monte's done in designing and running adventures for his own group and the larger gaming community. He could have changed his mind during this time, no?

Of course!

I've changed my mind about Harm several times during this neverending run of harm-threads. But I also consider the way people get themselves all worked up a neverending source of amusement. Yeah, it's a flaw I suppose. ;)
