For real, though, rather and diction sometimes require .ore.or less syllables, and using goofy synonyms is, like, the only tool English gives us to achieve that nice effect.Please allow me to hijack your complaint to talk about one of my own.
The words "use" and "utilize". "Utilize" is a worthless word. It just means "use". Whenever you say or write "utilize" you can save us all the time and energy and just say "use". They are exactly the same, one is just needlessly longer. If you think that "utilize" makes it sound more technical or serious or meaningful in any way, let me assure you it doesn't. It implies nothing, other than the fact that you wanted to use a longer word. It's a cheap veneer of of syllables used to hide a lack of meaning beneath.
I will not expand on this. If I wanted to expand on the word "use", well, see the above rant.
