It's a real tightrope walk because you can easily swing too far the other way and in doing insult the intelligence of your audience and waste their time.

I suppose. I just don't think that the text itself should be a puzzle. Meanings and layers and subtleties people can miss are fine. I dunno if I'm being clear (irony abounds) or even the extent to which we're disagreeing.
