Our comic shop has lots of smaller publishers (one puts out Power Rangers for my son, nothing like the boom in the 80s though with First, Dark Horse, etc...).

I'd say the market is probably healthier than it was in the 1980s and 1990s booms, both of which led to busts. Today, there are about a dozen smaller companies that have been in business and shipping full color comics for more than a decade, many of which have extremely big licenses that help them keep the doors open.
In contrast, the 1980s bust, when black and white comics became very cheap to do, had dozens or even hundreds of tiny "publishers" that almost all went out of business, with only First, Eclipse and a few others limping into the 1990s.
The 1990s bust was smaller, but the companies were bigger and the ones that survived are a shell of themselves today, mostly existing to hold onto the copyrights in the hopes that someone is desperate to put out another Bloodshot or Manowar movie or video game. Image is the big exception here, of course, quietly putting out lots of great books like Saga, long after it was the big shiny thing founded by Marvel defectors.
In comparison, publishers of today like IDW and Boom are likely to be an Archie-sized success for decades to come.
DC, as diminished as it's been, through terrible decisions on both the comics publishing and Warner Brothers side, is probably still comfortably the second biggest comics publisher around. Before counting it out, though, remember that Marvel was on its knees in the late 1990s before recovering spectacularly, both creatively and on the business side. It is definitely possible for DC to do the same, although someone might need to lock David Zaslav out of the building for that to happen.

I understand that Cheese, and Pepperoni are not for everyone, I understand there are dozens of workable toppings, and that yes, Pineapple is one of them.
That still doesnt mean Hawaiian is the answer to the 'The Best Pizza', because it isnt. It never will be. Is it A Pizza? Sure, of course. Is it a viable option? Yeah.
That doesnt change the fact that it wasn't winning any popularity contests, and it still wouldnt today.

I know you're being metaphorical, and I know that when people talk about pineapple in this thread they aren't actually talking about pineapple...but it's only a matter of time until someone chimes in about it and I wanted you to be prepared:
In at least one contest, pineapple is the most popular pizza topping in California, Florida, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oregon, Utah, and Virginia. It's also the second-most popular topping in America, overall.
It's also apparently the #1 topping in Australia, but I couldn't get the image to link.
I got this image from a Reddit thread, and the comments are hilarious. Everyone is all "I call bulls--t, there's no possible way that my favorite isn't everybody's favorite!" and lots of "I demand to see the data!" and "Google searches aren't the same thing as pizza orders!" and so on. Basically the same things people yell about with respect to D&D.
Turns out, that "pizza as D&D" metaphor was closer than I knew.
I know that personal experience isn't proof, but I can attest: when I worked in a pizzeria, pineapple was very popular. Not as popular as pepperoni or extra cheese, but it was definitely in the top three. If someone ordered a one-topping pizza, it was almost always pepperoni...but if they ordered a two-topping pizza, it was almost always pineapple and bacon. I don't know how useful that info is, but there it is.
