Look, I get it, okay? I am, as the kids say, just as "terminally online" as the rest of y'all. And when someone, who otherwise appears to be acting in good faith, is extremely, tragically wrong about something that is actually important, then that level of collective corrective action is perfectly justifiable, if not always particularly effective.

And I gotta say, I'm struggling to come up with a scenario less important than the theoretical implications of magic missile

My game preferences aren’t the current popular types. I accept this and generally don’t engage in arguments or debates over them. Maybe I’m odd, but I guess I’m just not that invested in RPGs and D&D to get super worked up about stuff. My identity isn’t defined by RPGs in part or in whole, so I’m not as invested. I’ve walked away from the hobby before, and can again. Just don’t understand why people get so worked up about it, but maybe I’m odd (okay, there is no maybe to that).

No, they did not do good work! Having no consideration for other people is not the same thing as being courageous!

This is why. We used to be defined by our work, or our faith, or our patriotism, but as those things fell away or were replaced for many, instead there is this void that needs to be filled to give someone an 'identity'.

For many, its hobbies, and so we see absolutely unhinged conversations, around something that (brace yourselves) is an elf game.

Well, of course you answered your own question: a lot of people you'll see posting on this sort of board do have their identity tied up in RPGs at least in part, so they're vulnerable to taking things more personally than is perhaps warranted. I'm not even going to say I don't land in the first half of this (I'm not as prone to getting worked up about it because my preferences aren't particularly centered around D&D so I don't have some of the networking concerns that I think underlay some of that.)

You’re clearly missing the point about someone else on the internet being wrong then.

(I would hope I don’t have to say this was a joke, but after spending a year reading these forums I’ll play it safe and say that was a joke.)

Someone's wrong on the internet? How dare they! I'm sure your well reasoned argument that's solidly backed up with research and facts will instantly sway them to see the error of their ways.

What's that? Facts don't change our minds?

Well, @#$%.
