The short story is that it was a licensing deal with DC, that Lorraine Williams killed by opening TSR West.

Has anyone ever started a thread about how Wizards and Fighters are complementary, and not diametrically opposed? I think a lot of folks forget that they are supposed to be cooperative members of a group, not warring individuals.
