What about Joyce's Ulysses? (I tried twice and didn't get far).

My paperback copy of the Silmarillion finally fell apart.
The Silmarillion is probably my single favorite book in the world of fantasy. I've gone through three copies of it now, finally settling on a very sturdy and high-quality hardbound edition the binding of which has withstood even me.

If it comes to it, I'll buy it again.

Never read Silmarillion whats it like?

(I liked Hobbit and Fellowship, thought two towers and return of the king sucked)
I'd say there's a lot of Beowulf in the Silmarillion, but told in a way that's more accessible to the modern reader. I also think Cadence's description captures it well.
