Maybe he felt sad about Watto's reversal of fortunes since Anni left lol.Did anybody else think it was weird how cool Anakin was with Watto in Episode 2?

That's a pretty amazing observation actually. This is going to go down a dangerous tangent, but this is another example that fuels my opinion that the Jedi were a downright evil cult.
When Anakin was a slave he lived with his mother who loved him and was given free time to pursue his own interests in technology (building a droid that he was allowed to keep, podracing, etc). We even see that he had a social network of kids his own age.
When he was "freed" by the Jedi, he was sent to one of their indoctrination camps. You know, like the one that we see Luke run in Mandalorian. Children are removed from their families and told they aren't allowed to contact anyone - friend or family - who they knew before. They are only allowed contact with their religious leaders and peers who teach them that their feelings are detrimental and to only care about the things the religion says are important. The children are taught that love and partnerships outside the religion (especially marriage) are ways to "the dark side". They are routinely pushed to - and past - their mental, physical, and spiritual limits in training that is indiscernible from torture. The Jedi Order will provide all; the Jedi Order will control all.
Compared to that hellish childhood? The time Anakin spent with Watto were only years Anakin was ever allowed to be a kid! Obvioiusly Anakin didn't have a great time on Tatooine; being a slave was still a rough life (and he hates sand). But in the end, switching to the Jedi was, at best, a latteral move for young Anakin. He was simply sold from one slave master to another. That's why he doesn't hate Watto; he never knew a life any better than what Watto provided him.

Patience, my young Padawan. Once you get past the centuries-long calendar scroll, you are in for a brilliant ride.
