And if you ever replied to a thread, you'll see the bell icon unless you specifically unwatch it--though you'll stop seeing notifications if you just stop looking at it. If you stopped paying attention to a thread, and you click into it again, you'll start seeing notifications for it again.

Also an FYI for those who don't know: You can toggle the default watch in your account Preferences. Mine is set to off, for example, so I don't get the participation notification, unless I turn it on specifically for that thread.

I had never participated in a bunch of the marked threads, though, nor clicked the "Watch" button. It remains a mystery!

I think (?) simply liking a post might be enough to turn on notifications for that thread if your prefs are set that way.

Hm, well I do have that turned on, but I swear there are threads I never even looked at, much less posted in or liked any posts in, that have the bell icon. Thanks for the continuing diligence!

Ah! There is a "Watch" button on a forum's page listing all the threads, not just on a thread. I almost never look at a forum listing page, but I must have clicked "Watch" on one a while ago. Problem solved.
