It makes about as much sense to cheer on the perpetual dominance of D&D in the RPG industry as it would to cheer on one restaurant chain taking over the entire restaurant industry.
My relationship to D&D is the same as my relationship to fast food: I know its dominance is bad for me and the wider world/industry and that I can find so many better options, but it's just good enough and too convenient to abandon it.

"Do I make something healthy, and clean up, or do I go get a slice of pizza." Me, yesterday.

It was the Pizza, and no it did NOT contain Pineapple.

Remember back when they put black olives on their tostadas? That was the real old-school, kids don't appreciate how easy they have these days.

Convenient, yes. Good, not really. Like fast food vs cooking at home, it’s better for you and cheaper to DIY than go with the corporate product.

D&D: The Kleenex and Aspirin of the RPG world.
That I can tell, Kimberly-Clark hasn't lost that trademark yet. Same with Xerox, Lycra, and Rollerblades (trademarks owned by different companies). Bayer losing Aspirin is the classic case, of course.
