Well, there's those people.

There are also the people that dislike game X, but like game Y.

Trouble is, almost no one talks about Y. So instead, they go into threads about X, and then just start trashing game X by using examples from game Y in order to turn the conversation to game Y. Until, eventually, no one is talking to them anymore.

And then they repeat with another thread. Which makes you wonder- why not just talk about game Y?

I suspect because they're used to crickets when they do. And they're frustrated and unable or unwilling to acknowledge that trashing other, more popular games isn't going to fix that (in my younger days, while not super-proactive about it, I sometimes leaned into that more than I should have).

Lately I've had people come to me asking me to run D&D 5e. I'm not doing that right now. I'm running weirdo stuff.
Yeah, my coworkers piping up, saying they wanted a 5E game, was kind of a shock, as I was prepared to go all-in on other stuff at least through the rest of the year. So there's a lot of dramatic gear shifting for me over the next few weeks, going back and forth between games.

In reasonable discourse there is no burden of proof for either side.

Eh, I sometimes think its more that there's a burden of proof for both sides if there's an actual argument, but that depends if there's a discernible status quo. Unless someone is going to present some kind of proof "X is bad." "No its not." is always an unbridgeable gap and a largely pointless exercise (for both people).

I think you nailed down the pivot date/point really for me @Whizbang Dustyboots and I just havent really been satisfied since 2020 as I look over the release schedule.

Its a me problem, for sure.
Everyone gets their turn to be underwhelmed, I think. While everyone was getting excited a few weeks ago about the prospect of a mega-adventure running all over the D&D multiverse doing something something something with obelisks and then another adventure focusing on Vecna, I was realizing that's two years worth of books I don't have to buy.
