I thought that one of the best things to come out of 4e was the concept of ritual magic being available to non caster characters, if they took the requisite feat. Create a limited list for native non casters, then toss in some healing ritual magic, and it would make for some really interesting character concepts. You could have a Fighter who dabbles in healing magic, for instance, who can take care of the party during long rests.
I agree; I made a 3.E character with this exact same concept using some third-party materials that had come out right around 4E's debut (but I'm not sure if they predated its actual release or not), and had a lot of fun with them.

I think 5e is probably the "best" edition so far, but that doesn't mean that there weren't aspects of previous editions that couldn't have been included. You can lift the baby out of the tub before throwing out the bathwater.

Sure.

And thankfully, D&D has a great community and tradition of homebrewing and 3PP that supports making tweaks to the game to accomplish what you want.*

But if you are going to reject homebrewing and 3PP, then you're just arguing for the game to reflect your own preferences ... of a prior edition. You don't want a solution.

Which, you know, if we all love the ritualized airing of grievance, then let's make every day Festivus!
