It feels like whether something is obscure or not doesn't depend on its ranking in a category, but on how well it is generally known. Something could be the second or third biggest thing in a category and still be inconsequential as a thing folks bother to know about. In other cases there might be a half dozen or more things in a category that are considered "mainstream" and widely recognized.
