Naull, a gnome?

She only wishes.

You know, it didn't take long did it. Yu knew someone was going to create a Gimble account here on EN World. You one lucky gnome, Mr. Gimble... what I wouldn't give to be iconic.

*sigh* ;)

Cheers!

p.s. Nice pic, BTW. Best iconic picture yet, except for Miss Druid. Yum, yum!

"Gnomes and halflings ceased to be unique..."

And I'm thankful for that ! When unique mean pot-bellied, hairy-footed, big-nosed, pointy-hatted sidekick here only to make children under 5 laugh, I'm pretty happy to see this uniqueness disappear.

Actually, what I meant is there isn't really a reason to have both races. Halflings are, racially, pretty much just short, agile humans. What personality traits (stereotypes) they don't share with humans, they share with gnomes because of the "little people" aspect.

As much as I prefer the classic gnome, I don't really have a _problem_ with the 3E gnome. By having both halflings and gnomes in the game, though, it blurs the racial distinctions. Halflings are just short (maybe nomadic, maybe theiving) humans (or gypsies, not that gypsies aren't human... ah, nevermind). Gnomes are just halflings with some innate magic.

If you want gnomes to actually look like they have a reason to exist, get rid of halflings.

YMMV

Ya'all better not be uffish when the frumiusness of this non-gnome galumphs forth. I mean, some of you are so mimsy and your minds so tulgey that you can't see the major boost in frabjousness that gnomes are going to be getting. The manxomeness of it astounds me.

I thought about doing this too. I'd like to take the gnome physical description and culture, slap on all the halfling racial attributes and abilities, and toss the rest.

I'd keep the gnome name. "halfling' is to Tolkein-y.

I figure, why wouldn't a race of tinkerers favor a class with the most skill points?

Options are nice, but halflings are redundant. If we need two small races, make the kobold a core race.

There was a thread about "cooling up" gnomes a while back. Someone (don't remember who) suggested using them as earth-lovers, in tune with nature, and lovers of wisdom and knowledge (instead of practical jokes and engineering :P)

Far closer to nature than halflings, and the world's librarians, basically, but to an extent that even the elves cannot manage.

I liked it; I stole it. :)

Definitely -- thanks! I'm pulling spells from R&RII because they've got lots of spells with the flavor I'm looking for (elemental-earth-related). I'm probably going to be toning a lot of them down a little or a lot, in order to mollify my DM -- earthblast, for example, is mostly more powerful than fireball, which just ain't right. (comparable damage, larger AoE, cool effect on anyone between caster and AoE, nifty nasty side effect on anyone within AoE -- all in exchange for limited location in which it can be used, and a smaller range. We'll be altering its damage way down to compensate).

Daniel

Tone down the damage? You're kidding me, right?

What is it with DM's who get thier panties in a wad whenever they see a semi-decent damage spell in the hands of a non-wizard? This spell is not more powerful than fireball, it's just different and it gives Druid's a decent offensive (read: damage dealing) spell at low levels. Cap the spell at 4d6+20 at 20th level and you're set. This spell is perfectly balanced for its level.

Prediction (and I'm amazed nobody has made it yet).

Gnomes prefered class will be bard (maybe with a choice between illusionist, maybe not).

Why make only one new Iconic character unless there was a big discrepancy that had to be corrected?

Half-orcs and halflings also only have one iconic so it's not a question of gnomes being ripped off.
Lots of classes (paladin, druid) have only one iconic member.
There is also a already non-human bard (specifically a half-elf) so it's not that bards are lacking in that way.

So why add just a gnome bard iconic and nothing else?
Every race there is an iconic character with their favored class. Furthermore Gnomes are the only race not to have a full class as their favored class.

I think it fits....
