The Running Man | Official Trailer

I’m not the biggest fan of King’s, so I didn’t know the original was based on his work. I still haven’t read it. However, I’m not surprised it wasn’t the best adaptation- he’s got an unfortunate track record in that regard.

That said, I appreciate the film as a dystopian action dark comedy. It does an excellent job of lampooning American sports fandom and marketing. ESPECIALLY those things in the context of the NFL and professional wrestling.

It should not be considered alongside weightier sci-fi flicks like Blade Runner.

I saw the trailer yesterday and thought it looked better than the Total Recall reboot. I enjoyed the original Running Man when I was younger. I haven't seen it as an adult with adult eyes. I'm looking forward to seeing this one. I haven't seen The Crow remake. I don't want it to diminish the original. I have my doubts for the Highlander remake also. I just watched the original again last week. I'd rather see it updated with better sound and FX than remade.
I didnt even know there was a Total Recall reboot - was it any good at all or should I just skip it?

So, like i commented up thread and it gets a quick mention in the trailer, but Ben's reason for being on the show is to pay for medication for his daughter's illness.

The setting of the book A future (2025) Dystopia that is slowly dying of both pollution and its own corruption. The government and the Games Network provide the sadistic games shown on the "Free-Vee" in order to keep the rabble content and docile. Anyone who dares stand up is blackballed from any work, if they're lucky. If they're unlucky they're forced to take part in the aforementioned Deadly Games or simply hunted down outright.

Free-Vee television has led to widespread illiteracy among the poor and put the 'newsies' out of business so the winos don't have anything to cover themselves while sleeping. The Network caters entirely for the Lowest Common Denominator, broadcasting pornography and deadly game shows so the proles will ignore the rampant pollution and lack of jobs. One character who was able to steal a library card found that with some research he could learn how to construct a cheap nose filter as good as those sold to the upper class. When the protagonist tries to broadcast this information on the Network, the authorities just censor his speech.

Is the Running Man and the Long Walk in a shared perambulationverse?

For the record, 'The Long Walk' was a Richard Bachman novel.
In case I've piqued anyone's interest and you're not finding it searching 'Stephen King'.

Getting back to The Running Man,
I think a modern adaptation could be interesting, although it might feel more like a documentary these days.
