I wonder how long until this becomes reality in the US.

Check out the statistics on both long and short term injuries (mostly brain related, but others too) for football, professional wrestling, boxing, etc. Then look at the racial, economic, and criminal backgrounds of the players. Finally, factor in long term health care options.

Considering how belabored definitions have been lately, I'd assume there's at least a few pages worth of arguments that we're pretty much there right now.

I think both movies are very much a product of the years they were made. Arnold's version was made when the USA was in the middle of a "Tough on Crime" thing. Coupled with one guy, Ted Turner, having near control of cable TV at the time(*), not hard to imagine a future where the main TV network was used to deal with convicted criminals for entertainment/educational purposes. A modern variation of the public execution. The new trailer addresses current concerns over cost of living + employment uncertainty coupled with the rise of reality TV. Of course, trailers are often very different from the actual movie.

(*) at the time he owned Turner Broadcasting System(TBS), Turner Classic Movies(TCM), Turner Network Television(TNT), Cable News Network(CNN), The Atlanta Braves(shown on TBS), MGM studios(bought for the movie library to show on his cable channels), plus other stuff.
