This is definately a year for my record books. So far...
...we've found out my wife is pregnant, after 2+ years of trying (gender unknown, due December 9th, thank you, we're very excited), and....
...I've been laid off, which isn't that bad because I'm 1/2 of a 2 person company, and the other person is my dad, so I'm getting my job back when work comes back, and....
...in the meantime I'm finishing off my house (pregnant wives deserve nice kitchens, finished bedrooms with real ceilings, and railings on stairs), with generous financial support from my mother-in-law, who....
...just this morning missed a step, broke one ankle, sprained the other, and is in the hospital awaiting surgery. She's 70, widowed, lives alone in a large house, and drives a stick shift. Her sister lives in the next town, and my wife & I are the next closest relatives, 2 hours away.
So yes, that's right -- I get to go live with my mother-in-law!
My wife and I are headed up tomorrow to prep a downstairs room as a bedroom. We're planning on bringing most of my tools, plus stuff to keep me amused in the evenings. I've made it very clear I'm NOT doing nursing stuff -- I'm happy to drive her around, go shopping, cook food, do the laundry, and that sort of thing, but my duties end at the bathroom and bedroom doors. My first priority will be talking them into converting half the laundry room into a handicapped accessible bathroom ASAP -- one TINY 1/2 bath isn't going to cut it for a rather rotund woman on crutches. Her sister's already on board with this, so it's pretty much a go -- we just need to get their regular contractor into the loop.
I can't wait to see what next week brings.
