The Treasure of the Tierra Padre... [Knight Otu Judging]

Round 10

OOC: Again, moving along under the assumption that A & O are going to pull R & I all the way out of the water...

Almayce and Oirhandir continue hauling away at the rop, until they pull Rogier and Iggy out of the pool. Oirhandir spots a jet-black creature emerge from the pool to perch on the opposite edge. It's about the same size and shape as a large otter, but instead of sleek fur, the creature is covered in glistening black scales adorned with miniscule spines and horns along its head and back. As it emerges from the water, a pair of bat leather wings unfurl with a slight flutter to shake off the moisture.

The creature looks across the pool, opens its mouth in a display of gleaming needle-sharp fangs, and sprays a shower of acidic spittle across the cave. Too late to shout a warning, Oirhandir manages to duck out of they way of the worst, but Rogier and Iggy, caught off guard while climbing out of the pool, bear the brunt of the attack.

Iggy emerges from the pool, sputtering and scared, but feeling triumphant that his friend is safe. This feeling doens't last long as he is splattered by acid, eliciting a high-pitched scream hardly suitable for an experienced adventurer. Turning and seeing the small creature, too far away for his only offensive spell, Iggy scrambles for his crossbow, and will shoot it as soon as possible. "Augh! What is that!"

OOC: Crossbow +4 1d6

"It has scales, wings, sharp teeth and it spits acid in a supposed dragon's cave?", Almayce starts to speak, but stops to cast a healing spell at Rogier.

"Maybe it's a squirrel.", Almayce continues with voice full of sarcasm. His voice also contains some amount of exitement, his eyes are locked at the supposed dragon, and a small grin is starting to show on his face. He also readies his crossbow.

OOC: Converting Bane to Cure Light Wounds, and casting it at Rogier.

Oirhandir grimaced as droplets of acid seared his back. "Another near miss like that, and I'm done for", he thought. He dared not think of what would happened had the monster caught him full force with it's deadly spray.

His hand instinctively went for the flap on his backpack that concealed his chimes. "Better not", he thought to himself. "If I stand here fumbling, that foul thing will pick me off like a deer staring at a sunrod in the dark." Oirhandir retreated a few steps away from the creature, then retrieved his mallet and chimes.

[sblock]OoC (Edited to fit the map Pbartender posted): I'm thinking that even with his staff lying on the cavern floor and his bedroll up on top of the hill with Gath and Razir, Oirhandir is still encumbered. So, he takes a 20 foot move away from the dragon. That should put him slightly up the slope to the entrance tunnel to the cavern, and may give him some cover. Backing up 20 feet will still leave Oirhandir within earshot of the rest of the party, which is all he needs. And, if for some reason, the tunnel is out of earshot, Oirhandir will stop at A6, right at the entrance. Either way, that's a move action.

He'll take what cover he can get. I think the dragon gets an attack of opportunity while he retrieves his chimes, but that's just the way it goes. Retrieving the chimes from his pack is another move action. 1 move action + 1 move action = 1 full round, right?[/sblock]

Feeling the burn of acid on his skin, Rogier searches for his equipment.

[Sblock]
I'm not quite sure where Rogier left his equipment, either inside or outside the cave (both would make sense in a way). Upon finding his equipment he'll grab his axe, shield, longbow and quiver, throwing the latter 2 on his back. If the equipment is outside, he'll just stand in the crowd with his dagger readied.[/sblock]

OOC: I just realized that I had a little bout of transposition while referring to my orignal description of the cave... I've added a crude map of the cave to the post above to clarify. Feel free to change your actions accordingly.

Venus... Rogiers weapons and armor are lying in a neat pile beside the pool where he dove (or somewhere else near at hand). I think a full-round action to pick up your axe, sheild, bow and arrows, and ready (or store) them as you see fit would be fair.

Round 11

Oirhandir backs off to the cover of the tunnel entrance, where he can dig out his chimes in relative safety. Almayce calls upon the wisdom of Gliran to soothe Rogier's pain so that he may quickly and efficiently dispose of the evil dragon. The angry red acid burns across Rogier's back and head smooth over into delicately smooth pink scar tissue. Revitalized, Rogier gathers up his weapons and shield, arming himself as well as he can, given the circumstances. Iggy takes careful aim with his crossbow, as the dragon shakes the water off itself. The bolt flies true as the wyrmling fans its wings, and it tears a ragged hole through the middle of one bat-skinned wing.

The dragon squawks at the sudden wound, and Iggy's stomach squirms as the monster glares at him with malicious intent. The dragon leaps straight up into the air and takes flight. Following the cave wall counter-clockwise, it swoops around in a wide circle outside the reach of either Rogier or Almayce. But as it passes Iggy, the dragon bears it fangs and its supple neck lashes out. Iggy has just enough time to throw up an arm and ward off the blow, but the needle sharp teeth just sink into his forearm itstead of his throat. Blood begins to soak the hapless wizard's sleeve.

Round 11:

Initiative Order:
21 Oirhandir
20 Almayce
19 Rogier
18 Iggy
13 Dragon

Combat Summary: Oirhandir retreats to the tunnel entrance and retrieves his musical instrument. Almayce casts cure light wounds on Rogier for 8 points of healing. Rogier picks up his weapons and shield. Iggy shoots his crossbow (18 +4 = 22) and hits for 6 points of damage. The black dragon flies around and bites Iggy for 3 points of damage.

Oirhandir is at 3/6 hp.
Almayce is at 6/6 hp.
Rogier is at 16/21 hp.
Iggy is at 2/11 hp.

Chimes in hand, Oirhandir played the melody to The Ley of Gelarda, which was best known for the verse in which Gelarda pierced the dread dragon Glordauk's heart and then lopped off the beast's head while it thrashed about in it's death throes. Oirhandir put his heart and spirit into the playing; truly slaying even a wyrmling such as this was a great and noble deed!

The verse complete, the elf carefully dropped the mallet and chimes on the floor of the cavern by the entrance, then pulled the bow from his shoulder and an arrow from his quiver, taking a moment to step back into the cavern as he did so.

[sblock]Inspire Courage +1, standard action. Drop chimes, free action. Draw bow and nock arrow, move action. 5-foot step if he needs it to bring the dragon into line of sight.[/sblock]
