D&D 4E The Ultimate PHBI4e Warforged Poll

Do you want warforged in 4e's PHB1, as a player race?

Status Report

Right now, the numbers are 18/35/23/143/14.

Not too many without a clear opinion about it.

All in all the numbers have held, though the Con side has gained a bit ground, and now over 2/3 of the voters don't want them in the PHB1.

The actual haters also gained ground.

Just from a poll-question generation viewpoint, I think the use of the term 'Warforged' unintentionally slants the question.. as the quote by GreatLemur {below} explemplifies. The focus becomes too much on the Eberron race rather than the concept of a living construct race.

Ok, but I wouldn't change my mind even if the name was different. A living (sentient) construct is already odd enough for me not to fit in the PHB, even if it is not forged for war.

Not really even close to constructs except in flavor.
.

Go from constructs to Warforged to any PHB race you like

Look at immunities, and the things they can do and I think you would put them far closer to constructs than the PHB race.

Seriously, except for flavor comment makes no sense.

I agree here, and that is one of my main points. The PHBI should be races that are common and typical throughout most campaigns. In Ebberon it sees the is a warforged behind every tree, especially if you look at adventuring parties.

I just cannot see them being so common.

I don't care either way.

The only thing that would concern me was if the inclusion of warforged knocked a classic core race (such as gnomes) out of the first PHB.

I'd like to see them in non Eberron specific supplements, but maybe not in the first PHB.

Like someone said, putting warforged there will mean that almost every other developer will nearly be forced to shoehorn them in subsequent products.

I think they are a bit too "weird" for a race that should be standard for all settings. I'd prefer shifters instead, since I think they are more "general purpose" IMHO.

That said, I'd surely love for the PHB to transcend the limits of Tolkienesque only base races.

I'd really love to see other old time D&D trademark races in the first PHB, like tieflings, aasimars, drow and lizardmen...

I think they fit in very well as a PC race in Eberron, but wouldn't fit in most standard fantasy worlds.

(quick scan of my memory and I can't think of *any* fantasy series with construct heroes. Sci-fi aplenty, but no fantasy ones (Eberron excepted, obviously)).

Can anyone else think of many?

Not many, but I can think of one example with a peculiar relevance to D&D: at least two stories in "The Dying Earth" featured heroic characters who were constructs in the D&D sense, having been grown in vats by magicians. Of course, they were alive - both of them had been made as sexual partners IIRC.

I think several of the characters in the Lyonesse series are constructs as well. Seems to be an idea Vance likes.

On the subject of the poll, I voted to put them in the Eberron CS, but I've found as others have that a change in their name and origin would make me accept them in the PHB. Call them "golems", give them stats for flesh, clay, stone and iron, say that they can be made by relatively low level casters but those casters have no special means to control their creations, and I think they'd be a fine PC race.

Very important point. I don't want the Realms infected with Warforged, and I don't care at all what their name is.
