The West Wing - My impossible hope

Who here has seen the old Christopher Walken movie, The Dead Zone? In it, Martin Sheen plays a congressional candidate, and at one point Walken's psychic character sees a vision of the future that would come if the zealous Sheen became president years down the road.

The scene is in some secluded house, with Sheen, his bodyguard, and some sort of general. Sheen demands that the general enters in his launch code, and when the man refuses, Sheen threatens to kill him. The general finally acquiesces, and Sheen looks very pleased with himself.

Just then, two people come to the door saying that the vice president had managed to broker a deal with the Russians, and they don't have to go to war (this movie came out in the 80s, so of course there were tensions with Russians).

President Martin Sheen's response?

"The angels are flying boys. Hallelujah. Hallelujah."

Now, it might just be a sick fantasy on my part, but I would love it if the last episode that Martin Sheen is in as president on The West Wing ended with him destroying the world in nuclear war. In the latest episode, rumors were that China and Russia were moving toward a conflict, which could draw the US into World War 3. I think that it's certainly possible that, with the right combination of tragedy, stress, and medication to ward off his MS, the president might just go loopy enough to blow up the world.

His daughter's going to get married some time this season. There's a presidential election whose result is in doubt. There's a war coming, and there's been assassinations in the middle east and a failed peace deal.

First, the Republican candidate wins the election, which angers much of Bartlet's party. They accuse him of abandoning them. Then China and Russia start fighting, Pakistan invades India, and the stress is just mounting like crazy. Bartlet tries taking some medication to keep things under control. He's tempted to send the US into the conflict to defend the peace he brokered in the middle east, but he doesn't want to ruin his daughter's wedding with warfare.

Then a terrorist attack strikes the wedding, and while Bartlet is gotten to safety, his entire family is killed. In a rage, Bartlet insists on immediate reaction, and he sends the army after the terrorists. Russia and China see this mobilization as a threat and move into position to strike the US, and then the president, with nothing really left to live for, says, "Well **** it," and decides to blow up the world.

But then, to preserve the series so they don't have to cancel the show, Christopher Walken shows up and assassinates the president.

I think this could really liven up the series.

Too boring. I'd rather that chaos above happen under a democratic President's administration.

But let's face it, as long as Aaron Sorkin can smuggle his marijuana past Customs, he won't let a Republican become the next POTUS after Bartlett. I mean, honestly, who'd like to see Hawkeye on TV? (I would but that is irrelevant.)

:p

P.S. The West Wing got to be boring now that I prefer to watch a more unrealistic Commander-in-Chief.

Throw in vice-president Sheen from that other Sorkin movie (via some kind of spatial rift), and give Walken's character an imaculatly choreographed dance scene through the White House and you've got yourself a deal, mister.

If they'd also retcon Sheen's character to be the same one he played in Apocalypse Now , I'm sold. You know, after the war, CPT Willard comes home, dries out, and finds new purpose in life as a candidate for office. :p

As a nightmare it would work. West Wing lost it when the Chief of Staff has a major heart attack at Camp David and no one finds him until the next morning. Of course it is interesting the actress playing Zoey is doing a commerical about Italy. And the president wife has a big part in new CBS comedy. Has the guy from Lost be seen as the General again this season?

I think what's going to happen is that Vinnick will narrowly win the popular vote, but then someone in the Electoral College will have a crisis of conscience, and give their vote for Santos, thus ushering him in as the next president.

pretty sure he was Chief of Staff, not VP, assuming you mean The American President. If not, carry on... ;) In other nitpicks, Walken did not kill Sheen in the dead zone, Sheen invented the Baby Shield years before Piratecat, but was caught on film doing it and killed himself later.

Can Vinnick break down and start screaming "It was a BABY!!!!" as his Korean war past comes back to haunt him, too? :p

I'm not sure what the obvious decision not to make a plot change that would write out every single character on a character driven drama has to do with random allagations of drug use, but whatever gets a laugh, I guess.
