I just noticed this too as I logged onto my Google page -- nice to have the
etymology :
Dictionary.com said:
Paladin derives from Late Latin palatinus, "an officer of the palace," from Latin palatium, "royal residence, palace," from Palatium, one of the seven hills of Rome, on which Augustus had his residence.

Seems about right.

When I hear "paladin", I think of, in order...

1) The Paladins/Peers of Charlemagne (Roland, Ogier the Dane, etc.)
2) "Have Gun, Will Travel"
3) the D&D character class
